Configuring Proxy MediaAgents for NDMP Agent Backup and Restore Operations

For NDMP backup and restore operations, if the MediaAgent associated with the storage policy does not have connectivity to the NAS file server, you can configure proxy MediaAgents that do have connectivity.

After a proxy MediaAgent is configured, the backup data flows from the file server to the proxy MediaAgent and from the proxy MediaAgent to the storage policy MediaAgent. The storage policy MediaAgent writes the data to the media.

In addition to file server connectivity, configure proxy MediaAgents for the following benefits:

  • Reduce LAN traffic by enabling client-side (source-side) deduplication. Client-side deduplication reduces traffic between the proxy MediaAgent and the storage policy MediaAgent.

To enable client-side deduplication, on the storage policy copy use Enable Deduplication on Clients or on the NDMP subclient use Enable Deduplication > On Client.

  • If multiple proxy MediaAgents are configured:

    • Load balance data transfer operations across resources.

    • Provide failover MediaAgents if a MediaAgent is unavailable.

    • Run backup jobs on multiple proxy MediaAgents.

The number of streams is divided by 4 to determine how many proxy MediaAgents can be used. For example, 8 streams divided by 4 is 2, so the backup job is run on 2 proxy MediaAgents. (The number of streams is determined by the number of subclient data readers and by the number of subclient content paths.)

You can configure proxy MediaAgents for the NDMP Agent at either the agent level or the subclient level. If you configure proxy MediaAgents at both the agent level and the subclient level, the subclient level takes precedence.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client.

  2. Do one of the following steps:

    • To add proxy MediaAgents at the agent level, right-click NDMP and then click Properties.

The NDMP Properties dialog box appears.

    • To add proxy MediaAgents at the subclient level, expand NDMP > backup set, right-click subclient and then click Properties.

The Subclient Properties dialog box appears.

  3. On the Proxy MA tab, under Available Proxy MediaAgents, click a client or client group, and then click Add.

    Tip

    • Use the search bar to search for the client or client group by name.

    • To add all of the entities in the list, click Add All.

  4. To configure load balancing, on the Proxy MA tab, add multiple proxy MediaAgents.

  5. Click OK.
