Excluding System State Components from Windows File System Backups

By default, the default subclient backs up the system state along with file system data. A system state backup is always a Full backup irrespective of whether you select Incremental or Differential backup. You can exclude some components from system state backup.

Warning: If you have excluded any critical system state component from the backup, you cannot use that backup for the system restore. For more information on critical and non-critical components, see Critical and Non-Critical System State Components for Windows File System.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Console, expand Client Computers > client > File System > backup_set.

  2. Right-click the appropriate subclient and click Properties.

  3. In the Subclient Properties dialog box, specify the basic settings for the subclient:

    1. In the Subclient name box, type the name of the subclient.

    2. On the Content tab, add the content to be backed up.

    3. Click the Filters tab.

    4. On the Filters tab, click Add under Exclude these files/folders/patterns group.

    5. Enclose the component that you want to exclude inside braces ({component}).

      For example:

      {IIS}{Content Indexing Catalogs}

    6. Click Add and then click OK.

    7. On the Storage Device tab, in the Storage Policy list, click a storage policy name to associate with the subclient.

      Tip: To create a new storage policy, click Create Storage Policy and follow the instructions in the storage policy creation wizard.

  4. Click OK.

Result

When you run a system state backup, the system state components added to the filters are not backed up.
