Enabling Automatic Media Discovery During Library Configuration

Once the media is available in the storage slot, the MediaAgent software must discover the media in order to use the media in the library. This is done automatically if the Enable Auto-Discover option for the library is enabled.

Procedure
  1. Display the Expert Storage Configuration window.

  2. Detect the devices. Use Device Detection as required.

  3. Configure the library as described in Configuring Devices.

    During the configuration process, if the library has a barcode reader, the Discover Media Options dialog box appears.

  4. Do either of the following:

    • To automatically discover the media in the library, select the default media type and then click Yes.

    • To manually discover the media, click No. See Discover Media from the CommCell Console for instructions about how to discover media in a library manually.

  5. Ensure that media is discovered before using the library for a data protection operations.

    If the library does not have a barcode reader, another Discover Media Options dialog box appears.

  6. Select the correct media type that is available in the library.

  7. Click OK.

Enabling (or Disabling) Automatic Media Discovery

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.

  2. Click the Media Usage tab.

  3. In the Auto-Discovery of Media area, select the Enable Auto-Discovery of Media into default scratch pool check box. (Clear this check box to disable this option.)

  4. Select the default media type available in the library from the Default Media Type list.

    Note

    The media that are available in a library must be compatible with the drives that are attached to the library.

  5. Click OK.

    When you subsequently import media, the imported media is automatically moved to the default scratch pool.

Discovering Media from the CommCell Console

You can use this procedure to:

  • Discover all media within a library

  • Discover a partial set of media within a library

  • From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.

  • Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Discover Media.

    If one or more new media are discovered, the Discover New Media dialog box appears.

  • Select the hardware type of the new media from the New Media Type list.

  • Select the scratch pool to which you want the media assigned from the Destination Scratch Pool list.

    The total number of undiscovered media available in the library is displayed in the No. of media in Free Media Pool field.

  • Specify the number of media to discover in the No. of media to be discovered field.

  • Click OK.

Discovering a Specific Media Within a Library

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries | <Library>.

  2. Click Media in Library.

    All of the media that are available in the library appear in the right-pane.

  3. Right-click the undiscovered media, and then click Discover.

  4. In the Discover New Media dialog box that appears, select the Media Type and Scratch Pool where the media must be moved.

  5. Click OK.

    The media is discovered and assigned to the specified scratch pool.

Preventing Import of Exported Media After Resetting a Library

For libraries with an I/E Port, media is imported back into the library after a reset operation. However, if you can prevent exported media from being reimported to the library. If the library is shared amongst multiple MediaAgents, all of the MediaAgent computers are affected.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources | Libraries.

  2. Right-click the appropriate library, and then click Properties.

  3. Click the Advanced tab.

  4. Click Add.

  5. In the Configuration Parameters section, select the Do not import media from I/E port back to the slots check box.

  6. Click OK.

Importing Outside Media Only

If you have media that are waiting in the I/E Port to be exported from the library, you can prevent them from being reimported when outside media are imported into the library.

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Media Management.

    The Media Management Configuration dialog box appears.

  2. On the Service Configuration tab, set the Import only media that were not moved to IE Port as part of export operation option to 1.

  3. Click OK.

    The next time you import outside media, any media that are waiting in the I/E Port for export remain in the I/E Port.

Importing Specific Media To Specific Slots

By default, when media is imported in a library, it is assigned to the available storage slots in a library. However, you can select media and import it to specific storage slots.

You can import specific media to a specific slot from the CommCell Console or by using the Command Line interface. For more information on importing specific media to a specific slot using command line, see Command Line Interface - qlibrary import.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand to Storage Resources > Libraries> appropriate tape library > I/E Ports.

  2. Right-click the appropriate media that you want to import and click Import.

    To select multiple media, hold down the Ctrl key and click on the media.

  3. In the Import Media dialog box, select the specific storage slots from the list of Available Slots and click Add to add a media or click Add All to add multiple media.

  4. Click OK to import media to the specific slots.
