Running Synthetic Full Backup Jobs

Synthetic full backup jobs can be started manually, scheduled to occur at regular intervals, or scheduled to occur automatically.

Note

You cannot run a synthetic full backup job if no incremental or differential backups were run after the last full or synthetic full backup.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Console, expand Client Computers > client > File System > defaultBackupSet.

  2. Right click subclient > Backup.

    The Backup Options window appears.

  3. Under Select Backup Type, select Synthetic Full.

  4. Optional: You can choose to run an incremental backup before or after the synthetic full to include or exclude any new or recently changed data in the synthetic full backup job. To do this, select Run Incremental Backup, and then select the Before Synthetic Full or After Synthetic Full option.

A synthetic full backup job creates a full backup from existing incremental and differential backup jobs. Because the source data for the synthetic full backup originates from existing backups, no new data is backed up unless the Run Incremental Backup option is selected.

    Note

This option does not apply to the following:

    • IntelliSnap

    • Synthetic full backup jobs controlled by an automatic schedule at the schedule policy level

    • VSA clients running VSA Indexing V2

  5. Under Job Initiation, select Immediate.

  6. Click OK.

You can track the progress of the backup job in the Job Controller. When the backup has completed, the Job Controller displays a status of Completed for it.
