Subclients for Microsoft OneDrive for Business

A default subclient is created automatically under the default instance. When you configure a subclient, you add the user accounts to the subclient. All the folders and files that are associated with each user account are included within that subclient.

If some user accounts have different backup requirements than those configured for the default subclient, you can create user-defined subclients. Assigning user accounts to user-defined subclients provides you with the ability to manage your data protection operations more effectively.

  • You can back up different user accounts on different schedules.

  • If the backup operation for a large default subclient cannot complete during the backup window, you can create several smaller subclients and back them up in parallel using multiple streams.

You can manually discover all your user accounts using the default subclient and run a single backup job to protect all the user accounts. Alternatively, you can auto discover the user accounts using either regular expressions to match the name of the user accounts, or an Azure affinity group name that contains all the user accounts that you want to discover.

After you run a backup operation, OneDrive quota information is fetched for auto discovery of user accounts, and the following information is displayed:

  • Yes - If the user has quota, and the user is logged into the OneDrive user account

  • No - If either the user has no quota, or they are not logged into their OneDrive user account

Quota details can also be fetched by running the backup operation.

Notes

  • OneDrive quota information is not fetched for manual discovery of user accounts.

  • Auto discovering affinities can only be configured for user-defined subclient.

Any user account that is not assigned to a subclient is automatically assigned to the default subclient. You can disable this feature by clearing the Automatically add new mailboxes that do not qualify for membership in any of the subclients check box on the Auto-discovery tab of the Subclient Properties dialog box.

Before You Begin

Only user accounts that have the appropriate OneDrive for Business licenses are available to be added to a subclient. For more information, consult Microsoft documentation.
