You can back up an Index Server on demand. For scheduled backups, the server plan that you selected for the Index Server manages the schedule.
Before You Begin
On the Index Server properties page, verify that there is a server backup plan associated with the Index Server.
Procedure

From the navigation pane, go to Manage > Infrastructure.
The Infrastructure page appears.

Click the Index servers tile.
The Index servers page appears.

In the Name column, click the Index Server.
The Index Server properties page appears.

On the Overview tab, in the upper-right corner of the page, click Backup.
The Select backup level dialog box appears.

Select one of the following backup options:

Full: Backs up all of the data.

Incremental: (default) Backs up the portion of the data that is new or that has changed since the last backup.

Synthetic full: Creates a full backup from the most recent full backup and all subsequent incremental backups. The resulting synthetic full backup is identical to a full backup.
