Performing 1-Touch Recovery for Windows or UNIX Computers

You can use the 1-Touch recovery operation to restore your Windows and UNIX client computers.

Start the Configuration Wizard

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > File servers.

    The File servers page appears.

  2. Click the file server.

    The file server page appears.

  3. In the upper-right corner of the client details page, click the 1-Touch recovery button.

    The Select Recovery Points page of the configuration wizard appears.

Using Point-In-Time Backup

By default, the latest data and configuration settings of the client computer, backed up in the default backup set, is used to restore the client computer to another computer that has the same hardware and disk configuration.

  1. To use a user-defined backup set, select a backup set from the list.

  2. Select a date and time.

    All the data that was backed up before the specified point-in-time is restored when the virtual machine is created.

  3. To recover from the latest backup and configuration, select the Recover from the latest backup and configuration check box.

  4. Click Next.

    The Computer and CommCell Configuration page appears.

Configuring Destination Machine Properties

  1. In the CommCell Configuration section, do the following:

    1. From the Associate with server group(s) list, select a server group to add the virtual machine or the physical computer.

    2. In the Network gateway field, specify the network gateway name if you did not specify the server group or the specified server group is not part of any network topology. The format for the network gateway name is ‘hostname:port’.

      Note

      If server group or network gateway is not specified then it is assumed that the CommServe server is accessible from the destination machine.

    3. From the Copy precedence list, select a copy of the backup data to use for the virtual machine or the physical computer.

  2. In the Computer Configuration section, do the following:

    1. To create the replica of the client computer, move the Clone Machine toggle key to the right and then specify the Hostname (not the FQDN). The client computer can be a physical computer or a virtual machine.

    2. Leave the Register machine with CommServe toggle key switched to the right so that the cloned computer is protected.

    3. In the Client name field, specify the name of client to be created in the CommServe server. This field is displayed only if the Register machine with CommServe toggle key is switched to the right.

    4. Specify the value in the Expire the VM after the specified number of days field as required. This field is displayed only if the Register machine with CommServe toggle key is switched to the left.

    5. (Optional) To add the destination machine to a domain, move the Domain credentials toggle key to the right and specify credentials of an account that has the required permissions.

    6. Review the Source computer boot firmware field. Possible values are BIOS or UEFI. 1-Touch recovery does not support cross-firmware machine restores.

  3. Click Next.

    The Machine Configuration page appears.

Disk Provisioning and Network Configurations

  1. Select the required Volumes.

    Note

    Ensure that there is enough disk space available for the selected volumes.

  2. In the Destination network section, select or add at least one network configuration with IP address and default gateway.

  3. Click Next.

    The Advanced Recovery Options page appears.

Additional Recovery Options

  1. To skip the Windows Mini-Setup (Sysprep) triggered as part of the recovery operation when the hardware mismatch is identified, select the Do not use Windows Mini-Setup (Sysprep) check box.

  2. To manually start the virtual machine, select the Do not automatically start the machine after recovery procedure is complete check box.

  3. To pause the recovery wizard at an early stage on the destination machine and perform troubleshooting steps manually, select the Enable troubleshooting on the 1-Touch recovery wizard check box.

  4. Click Submit.

    A response file is generated and downloaded. You must use this response file during the 1-Touch restore wizard. The default validity of the exported response file is seven days. You can either extend the validity or use another access token with different validity period.

Completing 1-Touch Recovery for Windows on Destination Computer Using Response File

  1. Copy the response file to a USB drive, removable disk, or a network location.

  2. Connect the USB drive or the removable disk to the computer that you use to perform 1-Touch recovery.

    If you want to use a network location to access the response file during the restore, follow the steps given in Accessing the Response File From an UNC Path during a Non-Interactive Restore.

  3. Use the ISO image to boot the client using any one of the following methods:

    • Burn a Live CD.

    • Copy the ISO to a USB drive and connect the USB drive to the client computer that you want to boot.

  4. In the Language Selection Dialog dialog box, select a language from the list. To use the same language for the keyboard, click Use default keyboard for the selected language check box and click OK.

  5. In the 1-Touch Recovery wizard, click OK to start the full system restore.

  6. In the 1-Touch Recovery Wizard, click OK.

  7. Remove the Live CD or the USB disk and restart the computer.

Completing 1-Touch Recovery for Linux on Destination Computer Using Response File

  1. Copy the response file to a USB drive, removable disk, or a network location.
  2. Connect the USB drive or the removable disk to the computer that you use to perform 1-Touch recovery.
    If you want to use an NFS location to access the response file during the restore, follow the steps given in Response File for Non-Interactive Recovery From an NFS Location.
  3. Perform a 1-Touch Non-Interactive Recovery.
