You can use the Commvault software to back up and restore Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) instances that are hosted by an Amazon Web Services (AWS) account.
The following guide is available for third-party marketplace users: Commvault in the AWS Marketplace.
Backups
Data You Can Back Up
-
Amazon EC2 instances
-
Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) resources
For more information, see Amazon VPC Resources That Are Protected by Commvault.

-
Attach restored volumes to a new instance or an existing instance
Backups You Can Use for Restores
-
The most recent backup: For example, restore the most recent backup to its original location
-
A backup from a specific date: For example, restore data to a point in time before it became unusable
-
Backups from a date range: For example, restore data that was accidentally deleted

Additional Features
Application-Aware Backups
Application-aware backups capture the state of application data at the time of the backup, including data in memory and pending transactions, making it easier to restore the application for continued use. For more information, see Application-Aware Backups.
Changed Block Tracking (CBT) Backups
Commvault uses Amazon EBS direct APIs to perform Change Block Tracking (CBT) backups of Amazon EC2 instances and associated Amazon EBS volumes. Amazon EBS direct APIs accelerate back up activity by identifying changes between two Amazon EBS snapshots by using the API. You can use Amazon EBS direct APIs or Change Block Tracking with streaming backups, and with the backup copy operation of IntelliSnap backups. By default, CBT is enabled when you create a new AWS hypervisor VM group. You can also enable CBT for existing VM groups. For more information about CBT for Amazon Web Services, see Changed Block Tracking for Amazon Web Services.
Cross-Hypervisor Restores
When restoring from a virtual machine backup, you can choose to convert a virtual machine to be used with a different hypervisor. For more information, see Cross-Hypervisor Restores.
Commvault Cost-Optimization Features
Reduce costs by using storage tiering, deduplication, and power management. For more information, see Commvault Cost Optimization Features
Disaster Recovery and Replication
Replicate instances for disaster recovery, with orchestration for failovers and failbacks. For more information, see Replication of Virtual Machines.
