Restoring Guest Files and Folders for OpenStack

You can restore files and folders from a backup of an OpenStack instance or image to a VSA proxy.

When you restore files from a Linux instance, the file recovery enabler specified for the hypervisor is used to recover files.

Before You Begin

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. Click the VM groups tab.

The VM group page appears. The VM groups area displays summary information for any existing VM groups.

  3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button action_button , and then click Restore.

The Select restore type page appears.

  4. Select Guest files and folders to restore files or folders to the source instance, to another instance, or to a guest agent.

    The Restore page appears.

  5. To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:

    1. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.

      The Settings dialog box appears.

    2. For MediaAgent, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the MediaAgent or to specify a MediaAgent:

      • Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.

      • To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.

    3. For Source, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the copy of backup data or to specify the copy:

      • Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.

      • To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.

    4. Click Save.

  6. In the left pane, expand the list, and then in the right pane, select the objects you want to restore:

    • To browse the contents inside an item, under Name, click the item.

    • To return to a higher level of the hierarchy, for data such as files, folders, and disks, above the right pane, in the path list, click an item.

    • In the upper-right area of the page, a message indicates which backup data is displayed. Click the down arrow, and then select any of the following options:

      • Show latest backups: Display data only for the most recent backups.

      • Show backups as of a specific date: Display data only up to the date you specify.

      • Show backups for a date range: Display data only within the date range you specify.

  7. Click Restore.

    Provide the following information:

    • Restore ACLs: Select one of the following options:

      • Restore ACLs Only: Restore permissions from the backup and apply them to the files specified for the restore.

      • Restore Data Only: Restore files and folders with the default permissions for the destination path.

      • Restore Both Data and ACLs: Restore files and folders while preserving source file and folder permissions.

    • Unconditional Overwrite: Select this check box to overwrite source files or folders with the same names.

    • Restore Destination: Leave the default settings to restore in place, or modify the following values to restore out of place:

      1. For Destination client, select the VSA proxy to be used for the restore.

      2. For Specify destination path, enter or browse to the location where the file or folder will be restored.

A file or folder can be restored to an NFS-mounted file system (Unix). Clients with NFS mounted to another machine can restore to that mount. Click the Browse button to see if the mount is visible.

    • Preserve Source Paths: Use the Preserve or Remove options to determine how many levels of parent folders are created for restored files. For example, when restoring a file from the /MEMOS/SALES folder, you can preserve two levels to create both folders, or preserve one level to create only the SALES folder.

    • Impersonate User: Select this option to specify a different user for the restore operation, and enter user credentials in the User Name, Password, and Confirm Password boxes.

  8. Click Submit.
