Storage (Fully Managed Deployments)

Before you create plans for your service catalog, provision storage libraries, and then create storage definitions in Commvault. You can define storage locations for cloud, disk, or tape libraries.

  • Define primary storage (Primary-Site1) in the same data center as the protected workloads.

  • Define secondary storage (Secondary-Site1) at a remote location.

Note

You can also share plans across tenants as required. The service provider or the tenant can choose to use a dedicated or a shared plan.

Using a shared plan does not limit the billing, restore capability, or any other functionality for the tenant. The Chargeback report will continue to show the storage consumption of each tenant. The tenants can also make use of the deduplication benefits in the shared plans.

Best Practices

  • For primary storage, provision disk libraries.

For secondary storage, provision disk libraries or cloud libraries. Restores from cloud libraries are likely to take longer.

  • Because recovery time is greater for tape libraries, and because restores of guest files from tape require fully indexed backups, use tape libraries only for long-term retention and archiving.

  • For each storage location, provide a dedicated solid-state drive (SSD) to contain the deduplication database and the index cache.

The size that is required for the SSD volume depends on the amount of backup data that is written to storage. For more information, see Hardware Specifications for Deduplication Mode.

  • Storage Accelerator provides a method for client machines to directly write data to the cloud storage without sending the data to another MediaAgent.

When using Storage Accelerators in MSP environments, it is recommended to create a separate storage pool and plan with a dedicated bucket and storage account for each tenant. This will ensure that data associated with each tenant is segregated and as a result each tenant will have exclusive access to their respective data.

For more information about Storage Accelerator, see Accelerating Cloud Storage Backups from Clients.
