Automatically Inject Xen and Nitro Drivers for Linux Guest VMs

Commvault supports automatically injecting Xen and Nitro drivers for Linux Guest VMs.

Supported Linux Operating Systems

  • Commvault supports automatic driver injection for the following versions of Linux, however guest VMs have to be from Red Hat distribution:

    • CentOS 7.x

    • CentOS 8.x

    • RHEL8

    • CentOS 7.x

    • Oracle Linux 7

    • Oracle Linux 8

  • Kernel modules for the required drivers must be present in the guest VM's module directory (/lib/modules). If kernel modules for xen-blkfront or xen-netfront are not available, the script will fail.

Before running backup, you may be required to run a procedure for your guest VMs to ensure network connectivity in AWS. See, Ethernet Naming Convention.

Setup Requirements

  • Configure a File Recovery Enabler for Linux (FREL) on the destination AWS hypervisor.

  • The File Recovery Enabler for Linux (FREL) must be used as the access node.

Procedure

After all the data has been written to the restored volumes during hotadd conversion jobs for Linux Guest VMs, driver injection will take place.

The driver injection process is as follows:

  1. Attach the restored OS disk to the Linux access node.

  2. Mount the restored OS disk.

  3. Determine the list of drivers to be injected.

  4. Run the driver injection script.

  5. Unmount and detach the restored OS disk.

Known Limitation

If you are performing a cross-vendor Replication to Amazon using Hot Add (for example, VMware to Amazon), when doing a Failback, make sure to have only a File Recovery Enabler for Linux (FREL) as the access node on the source hypervisor (for example, the VMware hypervisor).

Options for Conversion to AWS

When submitting the Restore, be sure to select the File Recovery Enabler (FREL) as the access node and Hot Add as the transport mode. For more information, see Options for Conversion to Amazon.
