Requirements for CommCell Migration

General Requirements

  • Verify that no jobs are in progress or are scheduled to occur on the clients that you are migrating. If jobs are scheduled, either perform the export at another time or disable all jobs for the client using the Activity Control tab from the Client Properties dialog box in the CommCell Console.

  • To ensure that all the copies that are associated with all storage policies are synchronized, perform an auxiliary copy operation before exporting the metadata records for migration.

  • To ensure that you have a complete copy of the CommServe server, in case a problem occurs during the migration, perform a disaster recovery backup operation prior to a migration operation.

  • If you use a V11 MediaAgent to perform the backup of any older version client in the V11 CommCell environment, and then you migrate the older version client to a older version CommCell environment. You cannot perform browse and restore operations. However, you can perform restore by job operations.

Migration Requirements

  • By default, CommCell Migration is disabled for V11 installs. For instructions to enable CommCell Migration, see Enabling CommCell Migration and Global Repository Cell (GRC) on a CommServe Computer.

  • Verify that compatible drives are available in the destination CommCell environment to restore the migrated backup data.

  • Verify that no duplicate barcodes exist between the tapes in the CommCell environments that you are migrating and the environment that you are migrating to.

If you find two tapes that have the same bar code, one of them must be changed.

  • Verify that the client that you are migrating has at least one subclient (default subclient or user-defined subclient).

CommServe Server

You can migrate clients and other entities between two CommCell environments of the same version or from the last one lower version to the destination CommCell version. You cannot migrate from a higher version CommCell environment to a lower version CommCell environment. For example, you can migrate clients from a V11 2022E (11.28) CommCell environment to a V11 2023 (11.30) CommCell environment, but you cannot migrate from a V11 FR24 CommCell environment to a V11 2023 (11.30) CommCell environment. Migration is not supported for end of life software releases.

Similarly, you can only migrate from a source CommCell with maintenance release lower than or equal to that of the destination CommCell. The source CommCell maintenance release cannot be higher than that of the destination CommCell.

If you are migrating to a CommCell environment that is a different release, perform the CommCell registration only in the more recent version CommCell environment, and then proceed with the registration of the migrated clients in the destination CommCell environment. During the registration process on the destination CommCell environment, skip the process of the CommServe registration.

SQL Server Version

The SQL Server version in the destination CommServe server can be same or a more recent version than the SQL Server version in the source CommServe server.

If the SQL version in the source CommServe server is more recent, then run an export job from the destination CommServe server. For more information, see Exporting Metadata from a Remote CommCell.
