Setting a Laptop Plan to Retire (and Delete) Offline Laptops

When a laptop is repurposed, stolen, lost, or discarded, it cannot connect to the Commvault software for scheduled backups and is considered offline.

When a laptop is offline for six months, the Commvault software initiates retirement automatically. The automatic retirement process involves the following steps:

  1. Uninstalling the laptop package

  2. Releasing the license

This automated process saves you from manual intervention, ensuring efficient management of your offline laptops.

Note

- The default settings for offline laptops differ in the company and CommCell settings. However, the laptop plan setting takes precedence over the CommCell and company settings.

- Upgrading customers are not opted into this behavior automatically.

Use this procedure to customize the days after which an offline laptop is automatically retired. Additionally, you can customize the number of days to retain the data on the automatically retired laptop for restoring purposes.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Manage > Plans.

    The Plans page appears.

  2. In the Plan name column, click the laptop plan that you want to set to retire offline laptops.

    The plan properties page appears.

  3. On the Overview tab, move the Advanced view toggle key to the right.

    The advanced plan properties appear.

  4. Under Manage offline laptops, do the following:

    1. In the Discontinue backups when laptops are offline for box, specify the period after which the offline laptop is retired automatically.

    2. In the Data cannot be restored after box, enter the time period for retaining the retired laptop and its data for restoring purposes. After the time elapses, the Commvault software purges the retired laptop data from the system.

Results

  • After the retirement time period completes, the Commvault software does the following:

    • Deletes offline laptops that do not have associated backup data.

    • Retires (deconfigures) offline laptops that have associated backup data.

  • After the deletion period completes, the Commvault software deletes retired laptops. Subsequently, you cannot restore the retired laptop and its data.
