A backup copy operation provides the capability to copy snapshots of the data to any media. Backup copy is useful for creating additional copies of data and can be performed during the IntelliSnap backup or at a later time.

If access nodes are configured at the agent or subclient level, then the NDMP agent processes run on these access nodes. Else, a MediaAgent associated with the storage policy/plan copy being used for backup copy will perform the operation. The backup copy uses a MediaAgent associated with primary copy or secondary snap copy of the storage policy.

If a MediaAgent associated with storage policy is also an access node, then this MediaAgent performs the operation. If there are no access nodes configured, then a MediaAgent with most available resources is selected to perform the operation.

Spool copy: If the primary snap copy is configured as a spool copy (copy with no retention rules), for most vendors the snapshots are automatically deleted after the backup copy operation completes successfully.
For NetApp and Dell EMC PowerStore snapshots, the Commvault does the following:

If cataloging is enabled for subclients with schedules or for subclients that use a storage policy with a deferred catalog, then one snapshot is retained.

If the NDMP jobs are run manually or using the scripts with cataloging enabled, then the spool copy is considered a true spool copy and does not retain a snapshot.

If the NDMP jobs are run manually or using the scripts with a spool copy, to maintain an extra snapshot, disable the Spool Copy (No Retention) setting in the storage policy.

Incremental backup copies: Most file servers limit the number of incremental backups that you can perform. When the maximum limit is reached, the next scheduled incremental backup copy is automatically converted to a differential backup copy job.
