Getting Started

Review each of the topics to get started with IBM i file system. Some of the steps require administrative knowledge of IBM i and must be implemented by or with assistance from an IBM i expert.

Step 1: Before You Begin

Refer to the following information to learn more about the capabilities and requirements of the IBM i File System Agent with Commvault VTL:

Step 2: Install File System Agent and File System for IBM i Agent on Access Node

Install the packages on a Linux access node.

You must also transfer the CVINSTPKG.savf installation package from the access node to the IBM i client by using FTP, and then perform the installation.

All updates that are installed on the access node are automatically pushed to all of the connected IBM i clients during the first communication session between the proxy and the IBM i client.

Step 3: Configure the MediaAgent Controlling the Commvault VTL

Select the MediaAgent to control Commvault VTL 2.0. The MediaAgent must be able to access Commvault VTL 2.0 through the Fiber Channel network. For more information about installing and configuring a MediaAgent, see the following:

Step 4: Install and Configure Commvault VTL 2.0 for IBM i Clients

Install and configure Commvault VTL 2.0, see Installing the Commvault VTL 2.0 for IBM i Clients.

Note

You can use the storage pool or the storage policy configured with IBM i VTL only for IBM i clients.

Step 5: Prepare for Your First Backup and Restore

  1. Open the CommCell Console.

  2. Configure an IBM i VTL Storage Policy.

  3. Create an IBM i File System Agent Client, and install the Commvault package on the IBM i client.

  4. Configure user-defined subclients.
