Getting Started with the SAP for Oracle Agent

Step 3: Verify the BR*Tools Version

SAP Note (1647272 P.12) advises that if the SAP on Oracle database has BR*Tools version 7.20(28)-7.20(31), a RMAN interface restore of a large number of files (greater than 100) fails, and a BACKINT interface restore runs slowly . This is due to the chunking feature, where a large number of files are not processed at one time, but in groups of 100. This feature was introduced in patch 7.20(28) and existed till patch 7.20(31). It was disabled in patch 7.20(32).

You can upgrade to BR*Tools 7.20(32) (or later) or to BR*Tools 7.40(4) to solve this issue.

Disable the SAP feature that causes the failure by setting the following SAP special parameters in init<DBSID>.sap.

_rman_grp_cnt = 9999

_util_grp_cnt = 9999

Step 4: Prepare for Your First Backup and Restore

  1. Open the CommCell Console.

  2. Configure a storage device. For more information, see one of the following:

    Decide what data to back up. SAP on Oracle database backups contain one or more of the following:

    • Only the entire database

    • Only archive logs

    • The SAP on Oracle control file

    • Individual datafiles and tablespaces

      Create subclients for each unique data set.

    Decide whether to schedule backups. Scheduling backups has the advantage of ensuring data is automatically backed up at regular intervals. Gather the following information prior to configuring schedules:

    • The schedule name

    • The schedule frequency

    • The schedule start time and start date

    • The schedule exceptions

      Create schedules for the backups.

    Scheduling

    Decide whether to encrypt the data for transmission over non-secure networks or storage media. Gather the following information prior to configuring encryption:

    • The encryption type

    • The encryption level (client, instance, subclient)

      Configure the encryption.

  4. Configure instances for the SAP on Oracle databases.

  5. Configure an online backup subclient.

Step 5: Run the Check Readiness Report

You can use the Check Readiness report to verify that the client and MediaAgent are connected to the CommServe computer and that the database agents are properly configured to run backup and restore jobs. Step 6: Run Your First Backup and Restore

  1. Perform an online full backup.

  2. Perform an initial restore.

Step 7: Where to Go from Here

  1. Optional: If database administrators are performing backups, you must also complete the following tasks for each administrator:

    1. Configure a CommCell User for each database administrator.

    2. Configure the User Group Permissions for each CommCell Console SAP for Oracle database administrator.

    3. Configure a Storage Policy for backups.

    4. Pass the following information to the Database Administrator:

      • The CommCell Console user name and password for the database administrator

      • The storage policy name
