Specifying the Servers that Run Backups in an Oracle Data Guard Configuration

Applies to: An Oracle primary host and the standby host. A non-Oracle RAC standby host when you have created an Oracle RAC pseudo-client.

When you have an Oracle Data Guard configuration, you can specify whether the primary or standby host runs the data and log backups.

You can display the roles for the ArchiveLog subclient, but you can't change them. The ArchiveLog subclient roles are inherited from the default subclient.

On an Oracle Unified Data Guard client that was installed prior to Commvault Platform Release (CPR) 2023 (11.30), when the first backup after the upgrade to CPR 2023 (11.30) runs on the upgraded client, the sORARUNBKPONDBROLE additional setting value is propagated to the subclient properties settings that are managed by the CommCell Console. The sORARUNBKPONDBROLE additional setting is no longer used.

Note

If you preview the script generated for a Data Guard backup, it displays all the client nodes to run the backup on, based on the streams selected. However, when the backup actually runs, the primary or standby database roles configured on the Properties dialog for the subclient are used to determine where the data and log backups run.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > instance.

  2. Right-click the subclient, and then select Properties.

    The subclient properties dialog appears.

  3. To specify where data and log backups run, do the following:

    1. On the Advanced tab, in the Run backups based on DB role area, from the Data list, select the role for the server that will run data backups.

    2. From the Log list, select the role for the server that will run log backups.

  4. Click OK to save your selections.
