Automatic Server Plan Backup Schedules and Associated Conversion Rules

Updated

Backup schedules are created based on your selections when you create a server plan. These schedules are automatically converted to full backup schedules based on backup conversion rules.

Generic Schedule

This table lists the schedules that are created automatically based on your selections when you create a server plan. For more information, see Creating a Server Plan. To modify the schedules, you can modify the server plan settings.

Agents

Expected run time

Synthetic full

In the Add backup destination dialog box, the Retention period, Extended Retention rules, and Backups to copy.

All agents that support synthetic full backups

  1. Based on a combination of the rules associated with the primary storage copy. The rules are as follows:

    • The number of days that should pass between automatic synthetic full backups.

    • The number of days that should pass between synthetic full backup jobs based on the storage policy’s extended retention rules defined by the user.

    • Whenever there is a possibility to reclaim more than 50% space from the backed up media of the subclient’s latest cycle.

For more information, see Adding an Automatic Synthetic Full Backup Schedule to a Schedule Policy.

  2. Based on the extended retention and selective copy settings in backup destination copies. For more information, see Configurations for RPO.

Incremental

In the RPO section, the Backup frequency setting is every 1 day (default value).

All agents

Based on backup RPO settings.

Continuous backup copy

In the Snapshot options section, the Backup copy frequency setting is 4 hours (the default value).

Note

Server plans created with default RPO for backup copy will be associated to the system generated backup copy schedule policy. If the RPO for backup copy is modified, then a new backup copy schedule policy is created with the plan name.

All agents that support snap backups

Based on backup RPO settings.

Incremental automatic for logs

In the Database options section, the Log backup RPO setting is 4 hours (the default value).

Note

Only the SQL server databases that use the full recovery model are eligible for automatic log backups.

All database agents

Every 4 hours. If the volume of the log files are more than the 80% threshold limit, then the archive log backup will run sooner than the default 4 hours schedule.

Agent-Specific Schedule

This table describes the conversion rules where incremental and synthetic full backup schedules are converted into a full backup schedule.

Schedule

Agents

When incremental backups are converted to full backups

Continuous incremental backup

  • Amazon Web Services

  • Azure SQL

Converts to a full backup 24 hours after the most recent full backup on the subclient.

Continuous/daily/weekly incremental backup

  • IBM Db2

  • IBM Informix

  • MySQL

  • Oracle Database

  • Oracle RAC

  • PostgreSQL

  • SAP HANA

  • SAP Sybase

Converts to a full backup 7 days after the most recent full backup on the subclient.

Daily/weekly incremental backup

SQL Server

Converts to a full backup seven days after the most recent full backup on the subclient or if the size of the differential backup is 75% or more than the size of the most recent full backup.

Note

The differential backups will only run once every 24 hours, even if you update the incremental backup schedule to run more frequently.

Daily/weekly incremental backup

  • Amazon Web Services

  • Azure SQL

Converts to a full backup as specified by the schedule policy.

Daily incremental and synthetic full

Salesforce

The synthetic full backup converts to a full backup every 90 days.
