Commvault provides a rich platform that provides multiple data services from data protection, migration and disaster recovery.
Backup as a Service (BaaS) is one of the base services offered by Commvault. BaaS provides backup and recovery services to virtualized Infrastructure utilizing the Commvault Virtual Server Agent (VSA) to Integrate with a on-premises or Cloud hypervisor for efficient protection operations. The iBaaS service is focused on organisations that are migrating their on-premises applications and business services to provider platforms.
The service does not constrain itself or target any particular market vertical (education, financial, medical, etc.).
Use Cases
There are two primary use cases considered in the development of the service:
-
As an application owner, you can recover your applications from corruption/user-error, so that you can offer resilient business services
-
As a application owner / business risk manager, you can recover critical business services to alternate sites, so that you can provide continuous business operation in the event of an entire site failure.
Service Features
The BaaS service includes the following features:

-
VMware or Hyper-V Virtual Machines
-
Supported Application Aware applications (hosted on VMs)
Virtual Machine Protection
The Virtual Machine (VM) offering is provided to service granular backup and recovery of VMwareTM and Hyper-VTM Virtual Machine instances located on existing Cloud platform.
The service integrates with Enterprise storage infrastructure and the relevant Hypervisor. The service includes the following features:
-
Aimed at smaller (for example – 30GB – 300GB) virtualized workloads such as Web Servers
-
Agentless / Proxy Based Protection methods
-
The ability to protect and recover:
-
Virtual Machine Image
-
Virtual Machine Disks and Volumes
-
Files / Folders
-
Application state and data
-
The recovery capabilities include:
-
VM, disk, file/folder and application recovery using Commvault Command Center
-
In-place recovery (to original host / site )
-
Out-of-place recovery (to alternate host / site – where supported)
There is a possibility to extend this service to include additional Hypervisors supported by the Commvault (future BaaS service releases). These hypervisors include:
-
Nutanix Acropolis (AHV)
-
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
