For users in an environment with Commvault V1 indexing (VSA V1), the user needs to have view permission for the storage policy/plan in addition to the use plan permissions for the storage policy/plan described later in this topic to have permission to view copy precedence.
By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment using the Automatic option. However, during a restore, you can select a specific MediaAgent to use instead of the default option. If you select a MediaAgent, the certain conditions must be met or the Commvault software selects the best alternative.

The MediaAgent must be available.

The MediaAgent must have read and write access permissions to the on-premises library.

The MediaAgent must support the respective file system format of the VM disks. (For example, don't select a Linux MediaAgent to browse a Windows guest VM backed up on a Windows MediaAgent.)
Live Mount Operations
Live mount operations always use the MediaAgent configured in the virtual machine policy, regardless of the MediaAgent you select during the restore process.
MediaAgents That Do Not Have a Storage Accelerator
A storage accelerator allows an access node or a MediaAgent to read data from the cloud library.
If the MediaAgent you specify is not enabled with a storage accelerator, but resides on an access node that is enabled with a storage accelerator, then the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent based on the following priorities:

Storage accelerator/LAN free

User-specified MediaAgent
-
Geographic proximity
If the Commvault software selects a MediaAgent other than the one you chose, then that information is included in the logs.
Copy Precedence
By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy using the Automatic option. However, you can select a specific source copy instead of using the default option. To view copy precedence you must have the Use plan permission on the associated plan.

All users, except VM end users, will be able to see copy precedence.

If workload regions are assigned to the destination client computer and associated storage pools, you can allow restore operations with Automatic copy precedence to select the source copy from a storage pool that is located closer to the destination client region.
To allow restore operations to select copies based on workload region, add the Geo Location Based Restores setting on the CommServe server. For more information about adding settings, see Adding a Setting for Servers and Server Groups.
