Application-Aware Backups for VM-Centric VSA

Updated

You can perform application-aware backups for VM-centric virtualization clients. The associated application plug-in can use Indexing Version 2 or Indexing Version 1.

  • If you perform an application-aware backup operation for an application that does not use Indexing Version 2, the backup operation uses Indexing Version 1 for the application backup. The operation does not upgrade the application plug-in to use Indexing Version 2.

  • If you perform an application-aware backup operation for an application that does use Indexing Version 2, the backup operation uses Indexing Version 2 for the application backup.

Changes in Application-Aware Backups with VM-Centric VSA

For VM-centric virtualization clients, application-aware backups operate differently:

  • When you perform an application-aware backup operation for a subclient under a virtualization client, the backup operation creates an instance, backup set, and subclient under each VM client, for all applications that are included in the application-aware backup operation for the VM.

  • The application-aware backup operation spawns child jobs for each VM (VSAAppAwareBackupWorkFlow) and for each application (Snap Backup).

  • Under each VM client, you can initiate an application-aware backup operation for the VM or for an application:

    • Right-click the backup set under the associated instance, point to All Tasks, and then click Backup All Subclients.
  • Under each VM client, you can initiate a restore operation:

    • To restore a VM or guest files, right-click the subclient under the Virtual Server instance, and then click Browse and Restore.

    • To restore data for an application, right-click the backup set under the application instance, point to All Tasks, and then click Browse and restore.

Alternatively, you can right-click the subclient under an application instance, and then click Browse and Restore.
