Creating a Virtualization Client for Nutanix AHV

The Nutanix AHV virtualization client manages data protection operations for a Nutanix cluster that runs AHV. If you have multiple AHV clusters, then you must create a different virtualization client for each one.

Note: The Nutanix AHV virtualization client is used only to protect virtual machines that run in the Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor (AHV). To support other hypervisors running on a Nutanix cluster (such as VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V), configure a virtualization client for that hypervisor.

To perform backup operations, each virtualization client can include multiple proxies where the Virtual Server Agent is installed. The virtualization client also enables proxy teaming, enabling proxy failovers for fault tolerant backups. Using multiple proxies for each virtualization client makes it possible to perform backups for a large number of virtual machines in a limited backup window.

When you create a Nutanix virtualization client, the Commvault software automatically creates a Nutanix instance, a backup set, and a default subclient that you can use to protect all virtual machines in the cluster. You can create additional subclients to perform separate protection operations for different groups of virtual machines. For example, you can create a different subclient for each Nutanix protection domain, and use the default subclient to protect any VMs that are not assigned to a protection domain.

Before You Begin

• For best results, install the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) on each virtual machine (node) either inside the cluster or outside of the cluster environment, or on any physical machine. VSA proxies that reside outside of the cluster will use the NAS data transport mode. VSA proxies that reside inside the cluster will use the HotAdd data transfer mode; these backups will be faster. You can deploy additional VSA proxies as needed for load balancing.

• Identify the IP address or fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for a controller VM in the Nutanix AHV cluster.

• Obtain user credentials for a Prism account with Prism administrator privileges for the Nutanix AHV cluster.

Procedure

1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click the Client Computers node, and then select New Client > Virtualization > Nutanix AHV.

   The Create Nutanix AHV Client dialog box appears.

2. Enter the name of the client computer in the Client Name box.

3. In the Nutanix Cluster box, enter the cluster name or the virtual IP address for the Nutanix AHV cluster.

4. Enter the user name and password to access the Nutanix cluster.

   Provide user credentials for a Prism account with Prism administrator privileges for the Nutanix AHV cluster.

5. From the Storage Policy list, select a storage policy to associate with the virtualization client.

   The storage policy you select is also associated with the default subclient that is created automatically for the virtualization client.

6. To select a proxy for backup, click Add.

7. To add VSA proxies, complete the following steps:

   1. From the Exclude list, select one or more proxies that reside in the Nutanix AHV cluster.

      The list displays all the clients that have the Virtual Server Agent installed and all the client groups. You can select one or more clients or client groups. When you select a client group, ensure that at least one client in the group has the Virtual Server Agent installed.

   2. Click Include.

      You can change the order of the proxies in the list by clicking the up arrow or the down arrow. The first proxy in the list is the coordinator proxy.

   3. Click OK.

8. Click OK.
