Descriptions of Services

The following section describes all of the services required by the different CommCell components.

Base Services

Commvault Communications Service (GxCVD)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server, Client

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): Cvfwd.exe

    This process acts as a data writer only while running on a MediaAgent.

  • Log files: CVD.log, CVPerfMgr.log

  • Description: Provides the ability to fetch or save metadata on the CommServe server when backup or restore are in progress. Communicates with the SMTP server if an email server is configured.

Commvault Network Daemon (GxFWD)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server, MediaAgent and Client

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): Cvfwd.exe

  • Log files: Cvfwd.log

  • Description: Responsible for tunneling Commvault connections across firewalls.

Commvault Client Manager Service (GxClMgrS)

  • CommCell components: Domino Mailbox Archiver, File System Agent, File Share Archiver Client, Virtual Server Agent, Web Server

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): ClMgrS.exe

  • Log files: ClMgrS.log

  • Description: Responsible for running and controlling recall jobs and failover operations on clusters. Uses SSL certificate to authenticate connections with clients. For Virtual Server Agents, the service tracks Hyper-V block changes.

Search Engine

Commvault Search Engine (GxSearchServer)

  • CommCell components: Client Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): GxSearchServer

  • Description: Forwards events generated on the local machine to the CommServe server and Web Server. In addition it helps to content index, search and preview the data.

Commvault Tomcat Service (GxTomcat)

  • CommCell components: Client Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): tomcat.exe

  • Description: Responsible for communicating with Web Server services and receiving the events from Web Server.

CommServe Services

Commvault Server Event Manager (GxEvMgrS)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): EvMgrS.exe

  • Log files: CS_CVMMInst.log, EvMgrS.log, WorkQueue.log

  • Description: Responsible for communicating with the CommCell Console and receives the events from the Clients and/or MediaAgents. Communicates with the SMTP server if an email server is configured.

Commvault Application Manager (GxApM)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server, Client computer

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): AppMgrSvc.exe

  • Log files: AppMgrService.log

  • Description: Provides access to server and client configurations for local and remote processes. This service is essential for the CommServe server. You can configure a client to run this process for a computer group to offload the service from the CommServe server.

Commvault Job Manager (GxJobMgr)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): JobMgr.exe

  • Log files: JobManager.log

  • Description: Responsible for running and controlling jobs and also communicate with the available resources.

Commvault Media & Library Manager (GXMLM)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): MediaManager.exe

  • Log files: ArchMgr.log, DBTblStats.log, MediaManager.log, MediaManagerPrune.log

  • Description: Responsible for controlling the hardware devices that are part of a CommCell.

Commvault Commands Manager (GxQSDK)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): QSDK.exe

  • Log files: QSDK.log

  • Description: Responsible for servicing command line requests and is therefore essential for command line operations.

Commvault Web Server Bridge Service (CVWebServerBridge)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): dotnet.exe

  • Log files: CVWebserverBridgeService.log

  • Description: Responsible for Web Server interaction with the CommServe server.

Commvault Platform Service (CVPlatformService)

  • CommCell components: CommServe server

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): dotnet.exe

  • Log files: CVDotNetContainer.log

  • Description: Responsible for hosting services like Task Manager.

MediaAgent Services

Commvault Media Mount Manager (GXMMM)

  • CommCell components: MediaAgent Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): CVMountd.exe

  • Log files: CVMA.log, IndexCacheServer.log

  • Description: Responsible for interacting with the hardware devices that are attached to the local host and are part of the CommCell.

Commvault Content Extractor (CVContentPreview)

  • CommCell components: MediaAgent Only

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): CVContentPreview.exe

  • Description: Responsible for generating previews of data that was backed up.

Message Queue

Commvault Messaging Queue (CVMessageQueue)

Commvault Client Manager Service

Commvault Client Manager Service (GXClMgrS)

  • CommCell components: File System Agent

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): ClMgrS.exe

  • Log files: ClMgrS.log

  • Description: Responsible for archiving or recovering the files.

CDR Services

Commvault Replication Service

  • CommCell components: ContinuousDataReplicator Agents

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): CVReplication.exe

  • Description: Installed on Clients with ContinuousDataReplicator. Responsible for replicating data from one client computer to another client computer.

VSS Provider Service

Commvault VSS Provider Service (GxVssProv)

  • CommCell components: VSS Provider Agents

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): VSS_SWProv_Svc.exe, VSS_HWPROV.SCV.exe

  • Log files: VssSwProvider.log

  • Description: Makes use of the Volume Shadow Service feature of the Windows operating system.

Workflow

Commvault Workflow Engine (CVJavaWorkflow)

  • CommCell components: Workflow

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): CVJavaWorkflow(Instance001).exe

  • Log files: Workflow.log

  • Description: Responsible for the Workflow engine. Communicates with the SMTP server if an email server is configured.

Web Console

Commvault Tomcat Service (GxTomcatInstance)

  • CommCell components: Web Console

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): Tomcat.exe

  • Log files: WebConsole.log

  • Description: Responsible for the Apache Tomcat server.

Services Not managed by the Process Manager

Cluster Administrator must be used to control this service.

Commvault Cluster Plugin (GxClusPlugin)

  • CommCell components: Client only (non-CommServe virtual machines)

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): GxWinClusterPlugin.exe

  • Log files: GxClusterPlugin.log

  • Description: Provides notification regarding whether or not the cluster group goes into an active or passive state. This service is essential for system functionality.

Web Server

Cluster Administrator must be used to control this service.

Commvault MongoDB Service(GxMongo)

  • CommCell components: Web Server computer

  • Windows processes (as shown in Task Manager): mongod.exe

  • Log files: mongodb.log

  • Description: Responsible for storing data that you can access quickly for REST API and notification modules. For more information, see KB article SEC0012.

On-demand Processes on a MediaAgent

  • Process name: CVJobRepliatorODS.exe

    Log file: CVJobReplicatorODS.log

    Description: Responsible for reading source data during auxiliary copy operation and streaming the data to destination MediaAgent.

  • Process name: AuxCopy.exe

    Log file: AuxCopy.log

    Description: Responsible for reading source data during auxiliary copy operation and streaming the data to destination MediaAgent.

  • Process name: CVODS.exe

    Description: This is an on-demand process that runs on MediaAgents and other clients. Responsible to run services on demand to perform a specific operation, and then goes down after an idle timeout.

    The CVODS process runs many services (such as CVJobReplicatorODS.exe and AuxCopy.exe) that include the following:

    • IndexServer CVODS: Responsible for creating and maintaining index on the MediaAgent

    • LogManager CVODS : Responsible for managing the index logs created during any backup job.

Services Applicable Only to UNIX

  • CommCell components: MediaAgent and Client

  • Service group: Base Services

  • Service name: cvlaunchd

  • Log files: cvlaunchd.log

  • Description: Responsible for spawning Commvault processes.
