Restoring an Exchange Database Out of Place to a Different Disk Location

Applies to: Exchange 2007 or later, and IntelliSnap

You can restore the database stores to a physically different location on disk (that is, a non-Exchange location), with a choice of whether to replay the transaction logs.

If you use Exchange 2007, the backup must be VSS-enabled. If you use Exchange 2010 or later, the backup is VSS-enabled by default.

If you use Exchange 2013 or later in a DAG environment, see the Microsoft TechNet article "Backup, Restore, and Disaster Recovery", http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876874.aspx.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure that the database that you want to restore is dismounted and marked for overwrite.

  • Make sure that the Storage Group or the Database name uses ASCII characters only and does not contain the plus (+) character.
