Processing for Using Resources from an Admin Account

When you configure a hypervisor to use Admin account resources, most operations that are initiated from the tenant hypervisor use resources from the Admin account and do most of the processing in the Admin account, with minimal effect on the tenant account.

Note: This feature was previously called "cross-account operations."

Encrypted Volumes

For instances with volumes that use AWS default encryption, the snapshots that Commvault takes during backups also use AWS default encryption.

To enable snapshots to be shared from the tenant account to the Admin account, Commvault creates a copy of each volume snapshot. The snapshot copies use custom encryption keys that have the alias 'cvlt-ec2'. Commvault shares the snapshots and custom encryption key to the Admin account. The Admin account can access the custom-encrypted snapshots as needed when performing backups and restores for the tenant account.

Streaming Backup Operations

  1. On the production account:
    1. Create an Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from the source instance.
    2. Share the AMI to the Admin account.
  2. On the Admin account:
    1. Create volumes from the AMI.
    2. Mount volumes to the proxy, create an instance, and back up the instance and volumes.
    3. Detach the volumes and then delete them.
    4. Delete the AMI.

HotAdd Restore Operations

  1. On the Admin account:
    1. Create empty volumes.
    2. Mount the volumes to the proxy and create an instance.
    3. Restore data.
    4. Detach the volumes.
    5. Create a snapshot of the volumes, and then delete the volumes.
    6. Share snapshots to the production account.
  2. On the production account:
    1. Create volumes from snapshots.
    2. Create the instance and attach the volumes.

Import Restore Operations

  1. On the Admin account:
    1. Initialize the cloud file system.
    2. Mount the Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) folder to the proxy.
    3. Share the bucket to the production account.
    4. Restore data as Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) pages in S3.
    5. Merge the VHDs.
    6. Launch the import task to create an AMI.
    7. Share the AMI to the production account.
  2. On the production account, restore the instance from the AMI.

IntelliSnap Backup Operations

IntelliSnap backup operations are unchanged for operations that use resources from an Admin account.

Backup Copy Operations

  1. On the production account:
    1. Share snapshots with the Admin account.
  2. On the Admin account:
    1. Create volumes.
    2. Mount the volumes to the proxy.
    3. Back up the volumes.
    4. Unmount the volumes.
    5. Unshare the snapshots.

Live Browse and File Recovery

Live browse and file recovery operations are unchanged for operations that use resources from an Admin account.

Agentless File Recovery

  1. Restore files to the local proxy.
  2. Share the bucket to the production account.
  3. Upload to the S3 bucket.
  4. Download to the instance in the production account.
