How is Data Stored and Managed in the Various Amazon S3 Archive Storage Classes

The following table provides information on how Commvault software stores and manages data in Amazon S3 combined storage classes, Amazon S3 Glacier Storage Class and Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive Storage Class.

Combined Storage Classes
(Standard/Glacier, Standard-IA/Glacier, One Zone-IA/Glacier, Intelligent-Tiering/Glacier, Standard/Deep Archive, Standard-IA/Deep Archive, One Zone-IA/Deep Archive, or Intelligent-Tiering/Deep Archive )

Glacier Storage Class / Deep Archive Storage Class

Deduplicated Backup

Metadata1 will be written in the respective3 storage class and data2 will be written in Glacier/Deep Archive storage.

Both metadata and data will be written in Glacier/Deep Archive storage.

Non Deduplicated Backup

All data4 will be written in the respective storage class.

All data will be written in Glacier/Deep Archive storage.

Restore

Workflow5 will recall the data from Glacier/Deep Archive storage to the respective storage class.

For deduplicated data, Workflow will recall both the metadata and the data from Glacier/Deep Archive storage, directly to the restore location.

For non-deduplicated data, all data will be recalled from Glacier/Deep Archive storage, directly to the restore location.

After Restore

Data will be moved back to Glacier/Deep Archive storage by the Workflow.

For deduplicated data, Workflow will move the metadata and data back to the Glacier/Deep Archive storage, once the recall period provided in the Workflow is met.

For non-deduplicated data, all data will be moved back to the Glacier/Deep Archive storage, once the recall period provided in the Workflow is met.

Micro-Pruning

Not supported.

1 Metadata refers to the information contained in the CHUNK_META_DATA folders in storage.

2 Data refers to the information contained in the SFILE_CONTAINER folders in storage.

3 Respective storage class refers to either the Standard, Standard-IA, One Zone or Intelligent-Tiering.

4 All data refers to non-deduplicated data stored in the CHUNK_XXXX folders. (CHUNK_META_DATA and SFILE_CONTAINER folders are not applicable for non-deduplicated data.)

5 Workflow refers to the Cloud Storage Archive Recall workflow. See Restoring Data from Archive Cloud Storage Using a Workflow for additional information on this workflow.
