Getting Started with File Storage Optimization

To get started with file storage optimization, install the software and then complete the File Storage Optimization setup wizard.

Step 1: Obtain Your User Credentials to Access the Command Center

Obtain the following information from your administrator:

  • The Command Center URL
  • Your Command Center user credentials

If the Command Center is not set up in your CommCell environment, contact your administrator to deploy the Command Center. For more information, see Quick Start Guide.

Step 2: Log On to the Command Center

Accessing the Command Center by using the URL and user account credentials that you obtained from the administrator.

Step 3: Install the Index Store and Index Gateway

Review the system requirements, and then install the Index Store package and the Index Gateway package. These entities perform the content indexing and data analysis operations required for File Storage Optimization.

Step 4: Complete the File Storage Optimization Wizard

Perform the configurations necessary to set up File Storage Optimization by completing the File Storage Optimization setup wizard. During the setup, you create a data classification plan, an index server, and an inventory. The inventory connects an index server with a domain such as Active Directory.

Step 5: Assign Permissions

Set permissions for users so that they can access File Storage Optimization:

To set permissions for a user, create an association between the Data Controller security role, the CommCell computer, and the infrastructure administrator and the data controller users. For more information, see Permissions for Activate.

Step 6: Add Data to Analyze

  • If you created projects in the Sensitive Data Governance application, the projects are listed on the File storage optimization page on the Projects tab.
  • To start analyzing data for file servers included in the inventory that you created, on the Servers tab, click Add server.

For information about adding file server data sources, see Adding a File Server Data Source.

  • To start analyzing data for all file servers in a server group, on the Server groups tab, click Add server group.

For information about adding server groups, see Adding a Server Group.
