Complete Backup and Recovery

Support for the Active Directory Application in the Command Center

You can use the Command Center to back up and recover individual Active Directory objects and their attributes. The Active Directory application, along with the Windows File Agent, provides complete data protection for a domain controller and the objects in a domain, including the LDS/ADAM objects and attributes.

Key Features

  • You can restore objects or attributes to a working domain controller.
  • You can also restore deleted objects or deleted attributes to a domain controller.
  • To restore objects, you do not have to restart the domain controller into Directory Restore Services Mode (DSRM).
  • To perform restore operations, you do not have to take the domain controller offline, and you do not have to run ntdsutil commands manually.
  • You can view the list of failed items using the job summary report.

Deleting Messages Using Exchange Mailbox

The delete feature allows the admin user to permanently delete any data that was backed up. 

You can delete backed up messages from the secondary storage in the following ways:

  • From the Command Center
  • From the Web Console

Change the Display Name for Clients in Commvault Software Interfaces

You can modify the display name for clients, including the CommServe client. The client display name enables administrators to change the name of the client as it appears in the software management consoles, such as the CommCell Console, the Command Center, and the Web Console.

Key Features

You can have multiple clients in the same CommCell environment that have the same display name without causing a conflict in the software. For example, display names can be used to support multi-tenant CommCell environments where two or more tenants have clients that need to display the same name to their end-users.

Use Changed Block Tracking for OpenStack

Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for OpenStack is a mechanism that enhances the incremental backup performance of large OpenStack cinder volumes. When enabled, CBT generates and maintains a bitmap file (which contains snapshots) of a cinder volume before and after an incremental backup operation runs. These snapshots are used as reference points. When a CBT-enabled backup is initiated, the OpenStack cvcompute API detects the changed data blocks since the last bitmap (reference point) generated during the previous CBT-enabled backup operation for that volume. Only the changed blocks that the OpenStack cvcompute API detects are backed up and written to backup media. After the incremental backup operation is complete, the previous bitmap file (reference point) that was used is deleted. The current operation's bitmap file is then used as the reference point for the next CBT-enabled incremental backup operation.

Extent-Based Backups for Hadoop (HDFS)

Extent-Based Backups integrate extent-based or chunk-based technology to increase the speed of backup operations. Extent-based backups break down a file into small, independent extents. These extents are potentially quicker to back up and are more resilient to network disruptions. Extent-based backups are helpful when the backup content consists of files that are so large that they might cause the available data streams to remain idle.

  • Large files are backed up using multiple streams that increases the speed of backups.
  • Backups are more efficient.
  • During network disruption, a backup job resumes exactly from the place the backup job was interrupted.

Oracle Agentless Backups

If you cannot install software on an Oracle server, then you can use agentless backup operations and restore operations. For Oracle, you use RMAN from the database command line, and you use crontab to trigger schedules.

You can perform only traditional streaming backup operations.

Key Features

  • Perform backup and restore operations on Oracle databases, without having an agent installed on the database server.
  • Restore to the same host, or to a new host (if a disaster occurs).

Setup Requirements

For agentless operations, the Oracle database must be on a server that runs Linux.

Accessing Restricted Locations on macOS Mojave

On macOS Mojave clients, Commvault backups require Full Disk Access permissions to back up user data on restricted paths, such as the user’s Calendars, Address Book, Photos, Reminders, and location services.

If you use an MDM (Mobile Device Management) tool, you can add a Privacy Preferences Policy Control (PPPC) payload script to your MDM profile. If you do not use an MDM tool, the Edge Monitor tool provides an on-screen guide to assign Full Disk Access permission to the Commvault backup process.

Restoring MySQL Data from a Standby Server

You can restore data to the master server and the standby server using any one of the following restore operations:

  • MySQL block-level restore operation
  • MySQL IntelliSnap restore operation

In the Command Center, you can use a Linux instance as a VSA proxy to back up and recover instances in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. 

You can perform live browse operations and restore files and folders information from backups of Linux guest instances.

Setup Requirements

Install the Virtual Server Agent and MediaAgent package on a CentOS 7.5 Linux instance so that it can serve as a Linux proxy and as a File Recovery Enabler for Linux (FREL).

The Commvault software is integrated with the SAP Landscape Management System (SAP LaMa) DB2 database refresh operation. The database refresh option keeps a test or development system synchronized with the production system.

Searching for Files Backed Up Using Backup Sets in the Command Center

When you view backed-up data for your computer using a backup set, you can search for files from the most recent indexed backup.

You can also use wildcard expressions in searches.

  • File type, such as audio, executable, image, Microsoft Office, system, and video
  • Files that were modified within the specified time range
  • You can also include folders in the search results

Live Sync for DB2

Live Sync for DB2 can automatically initiate a replication operation when any kind of backup operation runs on a DB2 database. With automatic replication, the replicated database is always in sync with the source database.

Key Features

The Live Sync feature includes the following capabilities:

  • It initiates a replication operation automatically after a Live Sync schedule is created. The whole database is replicated to the destination and includes the data, log, and history files.
  • It initiates a replication operation automatically after any backup job is completed on the source database.
  • If you use a copy precedence for Live Sync, Live Sync can automatically initiate a replication operation after an auxiliary copy operation.
  • It minimizes the impact on production systems' CPU and I/O by using the backup data, instead of the source database, for replications.

Use ACLs to Restrict User Access to Data in 3DFS Shares

System administrators can use ACLs (access control lists) to restrict user access to files and folders in 3DFS shares.

The client groups use the network topology instances to establish connections between each other, either in one direction, or in both directions. The clients in the client groups can be the CommServe computer, MediaAgents, or client computers.

Delegate Mailboxes and Folders in the Web Console or the Command Center

With the Exchange Mailbox Delegate feature, administrators or end users can delegate their mailbox or the folders in the mailbox without having the delegate access on the Exchange server.

A delegated mailbox is a mailbox that administrators or end users delegate to other users or user groups, who can use it to read and send email messages.

Live Sync Replication for SQL Databases in the Command Center

You can use the Live Sync feature to enable incremental replication from a backup of a SQL database to a synced copy of the SQL database. The Live Sync operation continuously applies changes from the source database backups since the most recent sync point.

Key Features

The Live Sync feature includes the following capabilities:

  • It initiates a replication operation automatically after a Live Sync schedule is created. The whole database is replicated to the destination and includes the data, logs, and history files.
  • It initiates a replication operation automatically after a log backup job is completed on the source database.
  • It copies the backup data to remote disaster recovery (DR) sites with deduplication to minimize wide area network (WAN) traffic. Live Sync then runs at the DR site.
  • It minimizes the impact on production systems' CPU and I/O by using the backup data, instead of the source database, for replications.
  • It supports the destination database sync in standby mode so that users can schedule workloads on the destination server.

Restore a PostgreSQL Server to a Disk (Application-Free Restore)

You can restore PostgreSQL data and transaction log files directly to a disk without the need for a PostgreSQL Agent on the destination computer.

Restore to a disk is used in the following scenarios:

  • To restore the transaction logs that are missing on a PostgreSQL Standby replication setup.

Single Sign-On for Identity Providers Using CAS Authentication

You can integrate supported web applications that use the Central Authentication Service (CAS) protocol with Commvault to enable single sign-on (SSO) to Commvault web applications.

CAS is a protocol for single sign-on used by some third-party web applications, such as Huawei FusionCloud. After configuring SSO for CAS authentication, users can log in to their Huawei FusionCloud, and then access Commvault web applications without the need to sign in again.

Configure Alerts to Monitor Critical Commvault Services on Clients

With new options for client-based alerts, you can configure the software to monitor the status of critical Commvault services on clients and client groups in your CommCell environment.

For example, you can create an alert to monitor critical services on your production servers every 15 minutes. If one or more critical services are down (stopped) for more than 15 minutes, the software will send alert notifications to the users specified in the alert criteria.

  • Alert stakeholders to critical service interruptions: Admins and other stakeholders can be made immediately aware of any critical service interruptions on your clients.
  • Configurable alert intervals: You can configure the amount of time that a service must be stopped before the alert is triggered, which gives administrators the flexibility to create different alerts for different groups of clients based on your needs.

Creating an Oracle Clone from Application-Aware Backup Snapshots

You can clone an Oracle database using the snapshots created from application-aware backups of a VMWare virtual machine that runs the Oracle application. 

When you create a clone, you must specify the reservation period. When the reservation period expires, the system automatically frees up the resources for the clone database.

Cloning the Oracle database is useful in the following scenarios:

  • Duplicate large databases in a short amount of time
  • Create test environments
  • Retrieve data quickly without intensive resource use on the production environment

Use Salesforce Sandbox Data Masking to Protect Sensitive Data

Use Salesforce data masking to change sensitive information when restoring production data to a sandbox. This is useful when populating or refreshing a sandbox for development or test purposes. Data masking allows realistic production data to be used without exposing sensitive information.

The Commvault software applies data-masking policies when you run a restore operation. Restore operations with data masking must be cross-instance restores.

Stage-Free Recovery of Cassandra Databases

You can recover Cassandra databases without restoring the data to a staging location. The stage-free recovery process uses the Commvault 3DFS solution to export the backup data as a network share, and then recovers the data from the share to the Cassandra cluster.

Key Features

The stage-free recovery process includes the following key features:

  • Because the data does not need to be staged, the recovery process is faster.
  • The recovery process can automatically invoke the Cassandra bulk loader (also called sstableloader) to load the data into the database.

Setup Requirements

The stage-free recovery process uses a Linux MediaAgent. If you used a Windows MediaAgent for the backup, then use a Linux MediaAgent as a proxy for the recovery.

Back Up and Restore Applications in OpenShift

You can use the Virtual Server Agent to back up and restore OpenShift applications that run as containerized workloads in the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. Organizations that use OpenShift as a platform for rapid development and deployment can use Commvault to protect application-specific data that works with objects that are provided by the OpenShift platform.

This solution protects application metadata and related objects, such as secrets, configuration maps, and persistent volumes. Restoring an application combines that application-specific information with platform-provided objects such as containers.

From the Command Center, you can configure an OpenShift hypervisor and perform backups and restores.

Configuring Cascading Network Gateway Connections Using Predefined Network Topologies

You can use predefined network topologies to configure cascading network gateway connections. In this topology, two groups of clients are each configured to communicate one-way to their own network gateway. Then each network gateway communicates one-way to each other, negotiating connections between the two groups of clients. This is a configuration often used in multi-tenant environments for service providers.

You can use PST ingestion for both the User Mailbox subclient and the Journal Mailbox subclient to counter the challenges of backing up and restoring personal folders that are available on network shares.

Back Up and Restore Exchange Public Folders

You can back up and restore Microsoft Exchange Public Folders by using the Exchange Mailbox Agent.

You must enable the All Public Folders group, and then assign Exchange archiving, cleanup, and retention policies to the group.

You can browse all Public Folder data at the user mailbox subclient level. You can perform archiving, restore, retention, and content indexing operations in all environments.

  • You can back up the default subclient.
  • For CIFS shares, you can add \\fileserver\ as the path to the default subclient so that all CIFS shares from a file server are automatically discovered.

The onboard operation assigns a role to the specific user and adds the user as an owner to the client. The API also assigns a server plan that matches the specified Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and storage pool settings to the subclient. This operation prepares the subclients and VM clients for data management based on the service level subscription.

The offboard operation removes the user as an owner of the client and disables further data management operations on the subclient or VM client. You can also offboard a user completely and stop data management operations on all the onboarded subclients or VM clients.

You can configure the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) for vCloud Director to support VM-centric backup and restore operations using Indexing Version 2.

This feature is available for streaming backup operations that are performed using the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) with vCloud Director.

For a new Commvault deployment with Service Pack 16 or more recent service packs, Indexing Version 2 is enabled by default, and a new vCloud virtualization client automatically uses Indexing Version 2 to support VM-centric operations. 

Key Features

  • VM clients:
    • Automatically create clients, backup sets, and subclients for each virtual machine during discovery. These entities are visible to end users as well as to administrators.
    • Associate VM backup sets with the parent backup set.
    • Enable or disable activity (backup, restore, and data aging) for individual VMs.
    • Specify security settings for individual VMs. In the CommCell Browser, end users can see only clients for virtual machines for which they have appropriate ownership and permissions.
    • Delete a VM client to delete the backup history for that VM.
  • Backups:
    • Perform streaming backup operations.
    • A backup operation for a subclient automatically creates child jobs with unique IDs for each VM, and commits VM-specific backup data as each child job finishes.
    • Distribute VM backup jobs across the available VSA proxies and MediaAgents, with a separate stream for each job.
    • Index extents are backed up for each VM. Subclient indexes are archived after all VM backups finish.
    • Changed block tracking (CBT) information is included as part of the index metadata. Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) information is stored as part of the extent header for each extent, and changed extents are backed up.
    • Run synthetic full backup operations for individual VMs.
    • Perform multi-stream synthetic full backup operations.
    • For streaming backups, incremental backups are maintained when VMs are moved to a different subclient within the same backup set.
  • Job control:
    • Perform job control operations for each VM.
    • Set the job priority for each VM.
  • Restores:
    • Browse and restore VMs or files from the client or the subclient for an individual VM, or from the backup set for a subclient.
    • For a restore job that includes multiple VMs, the restore operation can use up to 10 streams (one stream per VM).
    • Customized options for end user restores.
  • Other operations:
    • Customize retention and data aging for each VM.
    • Identify a subset of VMs for secondary copy operations.
    • Generate reports for specific VMs.

Use a Restricted IAM Role for AWS

To restrict access to AWS resources for Commvault operations, you can create a policy that restricts access to resources that are created and used by Commvault.

You can associate the policy with an Amazon hypervisor (Commvault virtualization client) using one of the following methods:

  • Create an IAM role that uses the policy, and attach the role to an Amazon instance that is configured as a VSA proxy for the hypervisor. With this method, choose the IAM Role option for authentication when you configure the hypervisor in Commvault, and specify access nodes (VSA proxies) that have the IAM role attached.
  • Attach the restricted policy to users or user groups. With this method, choose the Access and Secret Key option for authentication when you configure the hypervisor in Commvault, and then enter the access key and secret key associated with a user who has the restricted policy attached. 

You can use this restricted role for operations performed from the Command Center or from the CommCell Console.

Self-Service Backup and Restore for vCloud Director Tenants

For vCloud Director, MSPs can set up tenant organization hypervisors to enable tenants to manage their own environments. With Self-Service Backup and Restore, the tenants can manage their own virtual machines and VM Groups, as well as the scheduling of their backup and restore operations all from the Command Center.

To have tenants manage their own environments, the MSP admin must set up a vCloud Director tenant organization hypervisor. This hypervisor is associated with the tenant's organization entity in vCloud Director and the company entity in the Commvault software. With this, tenant users can view and manage only the virtual machines corresponding to their vCloud organization.

After you receive text message responses to your questions, you might be asked if you want details sent to your Commvault Cloud email account.

VMware Backups Use Enhanced HotAdd Dispatch Method for VMs in a vSAN Stretched Cluster

For VMs that are part of a vSAN stretched cluster, VMware backups that use the HotAdd transport mode can use a new VM dispatch method. When you back up a VM, the coordinator node tries to assign the backup to an access node (also called VSA proxy) that is part of the same fault domain as the source VM. This dispatch method is used when there is no access node available that runs on the same host as the source VM. 

This approach enables the access node to read data locally instead of sending data across the cluster network.

This VM dispatch method is available for vSAN stretched clusters on vSphere 6.5 and 6.7.

Deploy an access node within each fault domain for a vSAN stretched cluster.

  • To specify a standard location where VMs are mounted, or to enable non-admin users to configure backup validation, create a recovery target. 
  • Create a VM group for each set of guest VMs that run an application. For example, you can create one VM group for VMs that run SQL Server, and a separate VM group for VMs that run Exchange.
  • Obtain credentials for guest VMs that run applications.
  • Use a Windows access node (VSA proxy) for application validation.
  • If necessary, create custom validation scripts for applications. A script for SQL Server is included with the Virtual Server Agent package.
