Install Database Agents on Client Computers by Automatically Discovering Applications in the CommCell Console

When you install a third-party database application on a server or a client computer, you must install the Commvault software package for that application on the server or the client computer. This process can be labor-intensive for backup administrators because they have to maintain constant communication with application administrators and system administrators to make sure that all applications are protected.

To avoid this problem, you can enable the Auto discover applications option on the Command Center to discover existing and new applications and to install the appropriate Commvault software packages to protect those applications.

After the Commvault software is installed, for some applications, new database instances are automatically discovered by default. The software creates new database instances automatically, and then, according to the configured plan, backup jobs run automatically. Other applications do not automatically discover database instances, so you must manually configure backup and restore operations.

Use Cases for Automatic Discovery

In the following use cases, you can configure the Commvault software to detect third-party applications that are installed on a server or a client computer and then install the Commvault software package that backs up the data for those applications:

  • You want to simplify the deployment of application agents in an enterprise environment.
  • You have a managed service provider (MSP) environment.
  • You plan to add additional third-party applications after you install the Commvault software.

Manually Configuring Backup and Restore Operations

Some applications do not support automatic discovery of database instances. After the application is automatically installed, you must manually create new pseudoclients, instances, servers, backup sets, or subclients, and then configure them for backup and restore.
