Creating a Subclient

To provide protection for a specific set of instances, create a new subclient. A user-defined subclient can identify instances that have the same Service Level Agreement (SLA) or that need to be backed up on the same schedule. For example, you can create a subclient for each zone or for instances running the same operating system.

The default subclient is preconfigured to back up all instances that are not protected by other subclients.

Before You Begin


  1. From the CommCell Browser, navigate to Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > Amazon.
  2. Right-click a backup set and click New Subclient.
  3. On the General tab, enter the Subclient name.
  4. Identify instances to back up:
    1. Click the Content tab.
    2. Click Browse.

      The Browse dialog box appears.

    3. To display instance IDs, select Show VM Instance ID at the bottom of the dialog box.
    4. From the list at the top left, you can select a view to browse by availability groups or zones.
    5. Navigate to one or more instances and select them.
    6. Click OK.

      The selected instances are displayed in the Contents of subclient list.

  5. Click the Storage Device tab.
  6. Select a Storage Policy.
  7. Optional: On the Advanced Options tab you can choose the following options:
    • In the Proxies area, you can add proxies to be used for backups of the subclient.

      If you do not specify proxies at the subclient level, the proxies specified at the instance level are used.

    • Select Retain snapshot after Backup to keep a snapshot after streaming backup operations.

      This option reduces the time that is required to create subsequent snapshots and results in faster backups after the initial backup. The Commvault software retains the latest snapshot for each instance with the tag CV_Retain_Snap, and cleans up older snapshots after each backup operation.

  8. Click OK.
  9. In the Backup Schedule dialog box, click Do Not Schedule, and then click OK.
