Creating a Snapshot Copy of Amazon RDS or an Aurora Database in a Different Region

Create an Amazon RDS snapshot copy or an Aurora database cluster snapshot copy that is in a different region for Disaster Recovery purposes. You can share a snapshot to a different account.

Support

The Commvault solution supports the following operations:

  • Replication of a snapshot from same region to same or different region.
  • Share a snapshot to different account. If you are sharing encrypted snapshots, the KMS key must be shared with the target account.
  • Aurora database cluster snapshot copy.
  • Snapshot copy for encrypted RDS instance by using KMS key encryption is supported using an account that has a secret key/ access key or an IAM role.

To replicate copy of encrypted RDS snapshots, the user can either have a key with alias cvlt-rds or cvlt-master at destination region. If the user is using the key with a different alias, then the user must create a tag for the KMS key with tag name cvlt-rds or cvlt-master at the destination region with the value set to <Null>.

    Note:

    • IAM user must be added as key user for the KMS key used for the destination region.
    • Ensure key with cvlt alias or tag must be enabled at destination region.

Before You Begin

If the source Amazon RDS instance is using Custom Option Group, then verify that the Custom Option Group with similar name and parameters exist at the destination region.

Procedure

  1. Configure the Amazon Web Services Array controller. This is the storage array that the Commvault software automatically configures for Amazon RDS subclients.

For more information, see Configuring Array Controllers for a Storage Array.

  2. Create a selective snapshot copy of the Amazon RDS storage policy.
    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Policies > Storage Policies.
    2. Right-click the storage policy that is used for the Amazon RDS backup, and then select All Tasks > Create New Snapshot Copy.

The Snapshot Properties dialog box appears.

    3. On the General tab, provide the copy information:
      • In the Copy Name box, type a unique name.
      • Enable the Selective Copy check box.
      • Under Array Replication, click Vault/Replica.
      • Under Default Index Destination, select the library, MediaAgent, drive pool, and scratch pool to use for the snapshot copy.

Note: The drive pool and the scratch pool apply only to tape libraries.

    4. On the Retention tab, specify the rules that determine how long the software keeps the data.

For information on the retention rules, see Copy Properties - Retention.

    5. On the Copy Policy tab, perform the following selections.
      1. Select the Specify Source for Array Replica Copy check box and then from the list, select the snap copy storage policy.
      2. Select the backup cycles that determine how the software retains the backed up data. For more information, see Copy Properties - Copy Policy.
    6. Click OK.
  3. Configure the Amazon RDS storage policy rules for copying to the snapshot copy.
    1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Policies > Storage Policies.
    2. Right-click the storage policy that is used for the Amazon RDS backup, and then select Properties.

The Storage policy Properties dialog box appears.

    3. On the Snapshot tab, under Job Selection Rules, click Choose the Backup Selection Rule, and then click Advanced.
    4. On the Selection Rule dialog box, choose the rules for moving the data to the snapshot backup copy and then click OK. For more information, see Selection Rule.
    5. Click OK.
  4. Perform an auxiliary copy operation.
