Configuring the Dell EMC VMAX / Symmetrix Storage Array Using Array Management

Applies to: Dell EMC VMAX and Dell EMC Symmetrix

For IntelliSnap backups from Commvault software, add the Dell EMC VMAX / Symmetrix storage array and its configuration information to the CommServe database.

Before You Begin

  • If you are configuring the inline replication feature, you must add and configure both the local array and the remote array.
  • If you installed the Symmetrix SYMAPI library in a directory that is not the default directory, then for any Dell EMC VMAX / Symmetrix operations to work, edit the SYMAPI_HOME_DIR additional setting with the directory where the Symmetrix SYMAPI library is located.
  • Do not create device groups on the SMI-S server.

  1. On the ribbon in the CommCell Console, click the Storage tab, and then click Array Management.

The Array Management dialog box appears.

  2. Click Add.

The Array Properties dialog box appears.

  3. On the General tab, specify the following information:
    1. From the Snap Vendor list, select Dell EMC VMAX / Symmetrix.
    2. In the Name box, enter the Symmetrix array ID (Symm ID) of the array.
    3. In the Control Host box, enter the following information:
      • For Solutions Enabler earlier than 8.x, verify that the Control Host box contains a value.

You can enter any value in the Control Host box. (For example, you can enter NA.)

      • For Solutions Enabler 8.x or later, enter the hostname or the IP address of the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) provider.
    4. In the Credentials area, click Change.

The Enter the User Name and Password dialog box appears.

    5. Type the credentials of a user who has the Administrator privilege or Volume Manager privilege to access the array:
      • For Solutions Enabler 8.x or later, enter the same user credentials that you use for the SMI-S provider.
      • If the symcfg authorization is enabled on the Symmetrix Management Console, then enter the credentials for the Symmetrix Management Console.
    6. Click OK.
  4. To configure additional MediaAgents to perform operations on the storage array, click the Array Access Nodes tab, and then select configuration options.

For more information, see Configuring Array Access Nodes.

  5. On the Snap Configuration tab, configure the snapshot configuration properties for your environment or use the default values.

For more information, see Snap Configuration.

  6. Click OK.
