Help for GxTail Menus
This page provides decriptions of commands available in GxTail that are not standard to Windows programs, and not self-evident.
If no file is currently open, this command is available. It lets you open two or more files contained in one folder, merged and sequenced, as a single tab in GxTail. Use CTRL+click or SHIFT+click to select two or more files.
Save the currently displayed log file to a new place and/or under a different name. If filtering is in effect, the file contains all messages, not only those that meet the filter criteria.
Saves the current set of open tabs into a file you name, so that by opening that file, you can recreate that state of the tabs.
If an SMTP server is configured, click this to send an email message containing the active log file as an attachment.
Prevents the currently active file from being dynamically updated while you are looking at it. Applies only to files that can be dynamically updated.
Enable Auto Markers
Applies the currently defined set of markers to new tabs when they are opened.
Enable SIDB Physical Deletes Formatting
Selecting this option formats log files received in SIDB PhysicalDeletes format to appear as a standard format log in GxTail.
Find Selected Text
Loads the selected text into the Find What box in the Find dialog box, and shows the next occurrence of the string. Pressing F does the same thing, and repeatedly pressing F is a shortcut for finding each next occurrence.
Markers & Filter
Opens the Markers & Filter dialog box (that shows all 20 available markers), where you set criteria for marking (highlighting) and filtering log contents based on simple text strings or regular expressions.
Apply Filter/Marker to this File Type
Applies the currently defined filtering and marker criteria to all open logs of the same type. For example, CVD.log, CVD_1.log and CVD_2.log are considered files of the same type, based on the portion of the name of the log file that comes before any iteration indicator (_1, _2, etc.).
Lets you view or set details parameters for one marker.
Enable Markers (Disable Markers)
Turns on (or turns off) the markers currently defined. Does not affect the marker definitions.
Opens the Filter dialog box, where you set values for selected fields or text strings to include or to exclude. Log lines containing (and/or not containing) those strings are displayed.
Enable Filter (Disable Filter)
Turns on (or turns off) the filtering you set in the Filter dialog box. Use this command to toggle filtering without changing the filtering values you have entered.
Add Selected Text to Filter
Click this to add the text currently highlighted in the log to the Include Containing String box in the Filter dialog box. If the filter already has a value in this box, the highlighted text is appended to that value, separated from it by an "or" operator.
Add Selected Text to Exclude Filter
Click this to add the log text currently highlighted to the Exclude Containing String box in the Filter dialog box. If the filter already has a value in this box, the highlighted text is appended to that value, separated from it by an "or" operator.
Filter To Output Window
Copies to a new tab the contents in the current tab that meet the currently defined filter criteria.
Sets or clears a bookmark on the line in the log where the insertion point is located.
Toggles between showing log contents as white characters on a black background, and black characters on a white background.
If this is selected, and File > Work Offline is not enabled, when new log data is added to the open log, the window scrolls to the bottom of the open log.
As a log file becomes full, it is renamed to reflect that is has changed its position in the list of files of that type. For example, CVD.log becomes CVD_1.log when a new CVD.log file is created. If there already was a CVD_1.log file, that file is renamed to CVD_2.log, and so on. If you enable the Follow Rollover option, if the file in the currently active tab gets renamed by this process, the view in GxTail does not change, and the tab reflects the new name.
Turns on tailing (dynamically adding data to active log files) for all open files.
Disable Tail All
Turns off tailing (dynamically adding data to active log files) for all open files.
Sets the level of visual transparency of the entire GxTail window. This can be helpful when screen real estate is tight, or Always on top is selected, and you want to simultaneously see the log data and something that appears in a window beneath it.
Opens the Customize dialog box, from which many parameters and options may be set that affect the working and appearance of GxTail. See Customizing the Tool.
Opens the Error Lookup dialog box, where you enter an error code from the log file, and GxTail returns a description of the error. See Looking Up Errors.
Extract CAB Files
Unpacks a cabinet (.cab) file into the individual log files contained in it.
Explorer With Selected Text
Opens a directory or file that is found at the path you have selected in the log file. If the path ends in a file, and that file type is associated with an application, the file opens in that application.
Regular Expression Builder
Use this dialog box to help in creating regular expressions to use in finding, filtering and marking log file contents. Once created, you can copy and paste the expression into the Marker Text box on the Marker Properties dialog box.
