Setting Up a Licensing Server for a Multi-CommCell Environment

In a multi-CommCell environment, you can use a CommServe computer as the licensing server, where you apply all licensing control mechanisms so that licensing resources can be shared among all CommServe computers in the environment.

Before You Begin

  • Determine which CommServe computer you want to use as the licensing server.
  • Requirement: The CommServe computer must have the Metrics Reporting package installed. If the package is not installed, see Installing the Metrics Reporting Server.
  • The Licensing Server hardware requirements are the same as those for the Private Metrics Reporting Server. To review the hardware requirements, see Hardware Specifications for the Private Metrics Reporting Server.
  • Both the License Server and the child CommServe computers must be installed with V11 Service Pack 6 or later.
  • Because the Private Metrics Reporting Server plays the role of a License Server, the child CommServe computers must be able to send data to the Private Metrics Reporting Server over HTTP or HTTPS. To configure HTTPS, see Configuring Secured Access.
  • The License Server cannot be installed with an earlier version of the software than the child CommServe computers.

For example: a License Server can be installed with V11 Service Pack 8 and the child CommServe computer can be installed with V11 Service Pack 6. However, the License Server cannot be installed with V11 Service Pack 6, while the child CommServe computer is installed with V11 Service Pack 8.

Procedure

  1. Enable the client group backup quota feature on all the participating CommServe computers, starting with the licensing server.
    1. From the CommCell Console ribbon, click Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel window, under CommCell, click System.
    3. In the System dialog box, select the Enable License Limits at Client Group check box.
    4. Repeat the steps for each of the participating CommServe computers.
  2. Change the download and upload URL of the Metrics Reporting Server on all the participating CommServe computers to use the URL of the licensing server.
    1. From the CommCell Console ribbon of one of the CommServe computers, click Control Panel.
    2. In the Control Panel window, under Monitoring, click Private Metrics Reporting.
    3. In the Private Metrics Reporting dialog box, update the Download URL and Upload URL boxes.
      • Download URL sample: http://cs_licensing_server:80/downloads/sqlscripts
      • Upload URL sample: http://cs_licensing_server:80/webconsole

where cs_licensing_server is the hostname of the CommServe computer that you plan to configure as the licensing server.

Notes:The first time you activate Metrics Reporting, data is collected within the next hour, and then uploaded to the Private Metrics Reporting Server or the Web Console, depending on your configuration. After Metrics Reporting is activated, data collection runs at the same time every 24 hours. Then the upload is compiled and sent to the Private Metrics Reporting Server or the Web Console, depending on the schedule that is configured in the upload frequency setting.
To upload data immediately, on the General tab, click Upload Now.

    4. Repeat the steps for each of the participating CommServe computers, except for the licensing server.
  3. Send an email to prodreg@commvault.com to request licenses for all the participating CommServe computers.

In the email, you must specify which CommServe computer you want to use as the licensing server, and you must also provide the CommCell ID, serial number, registration code, and IP address of each CommServe computer. This information can be found in the License Administration dialog box of the CommCell Console.

  4. Confirm the receipt of the email containing the licenses for your multi-CommCell environment.

The email includes license files for each of the participating CommServe computers. Save the license files on a location that is accessible by the CommServe computers.

  5. Apply the license file on each of the participating CommServe computers, starting with the licensing server.
    1. From the CommCell Console ribbon, click Licensing and Registration.
    2. In the Licensing and Registration dialog box, click the Apply License tab.
    3. Click Browse to locate the license file, and when the file is specified in the License File box, click Apply and then click Close.

If communication is lost between the child CommServe computer and the licensing server, after 5 days, a message appears that says the CommServe computer is over capacity. You can then use the reset operation to resume the backup operations. You can reset the capacity usage a total of 8 times.

Result

The multi-CommCell environment now relies on the licensing server to monitor the license usage and manage licensing control mechanisms.
