Getting Started with NDMP

Review each of the topics to get started with the NDMP agent.

Step 1: Obtain Your User Credentials to Access the Command Center

Obtain the following information from your administrator:

  • The Command Center URL
  • Your Command Center user credentials

If the Command Center is not set up in your CommCell environment, contact your administrator to deploy the Command Center. For more information, see Quick Start Guide.

Step 2: Log On to the Command Center

Accessing the Command Center by using the URL and user account credentials that you obtained from the administrator.

Step 3: Add a NAS Server

To back up NDMP file system data, you must add a NAS server. (Because the software for the NDMP Agent is installed automatically as part of the MediaAgent installation, no additional software is needed.)

Note: If the data you want to backup resides on a Storage Virtual Machine (vFiler or Vserver), configure the Storage Virtual Machine as the NAS server.

If you want to use IntelliSnap to back up NDMP, add a storage array instead of a NAS server. When the storage array is created, a NAS server is automatically created for you. For information about configuring snapshots, see Snapshots.

For instructions, see Adding a NAS Server for NDMP Backup Operations.

Step 4: Associate a Server Backup Plan with the NDMP Subclient

To protect the NDMP data, you must associate a plan with the NDMP subclient. The plan defines the storage for the backup data, the RPO (recovery point objective), and the data retention period.

For instructions, see Associating a Server Backup Plan with an NDMP Subclient.

Step 5: Perform Your First Backup and Restore

To confirm that your system is set up correctly, perform an on-demand backup, and then perform a restore.

  1. Perform a backup.
  2. Perform a restore.
