Getting Started with Laptop

The Getting Started procedure describes the steps that first-time users must follow to set up the Endpoint application in the Admin Console.

Important: The setup for the Endpoint application includes inviting your end users to install the end-user Laptop package on their devices.

Before You Begin

If you want to minimize the information your end users must provide during the installation of the end-user Laptop package, you can create a custom package. For information on creating a custom package for you end users, see Creating an End-User Laptop Package.

Step 1: Install the Commvault Edge Server Package

To access the Laptop application, you must install the Commvault Edge Server package. For instructions, see Installing the Commvault Edge Server Package.

Step 2: Log on to the Admin Console

Access the Admin Console using the URL that was displayed on the installation completion page.

Step 3: Complete the Core Setup Wizard

Configure core information by completing the Core Setup Wizard.

Step 4: Complete the Laptop Application Setup Wizard

Configure the Endpoint application by completing the Setup Wizard.

Note: The Setup Wizard includes creating a basic plan. The plan contains the features users can access and the information needed to backup data, for example, the storage pool, backup frequency, and the data to backup. After you create a plan by using the setup wizard, you can configure additional options on your plan. For information on creating plans outside of the setup wizard, see Creating a Laptop Plan.

Step 5: Go to the Devices Page to Monitor End-User Installations

After the end-user Laptop package is installed on devices, those devices appear on the Devices page. Users who are part of a user group where the Enable for shared laptop usage option is selected are activated as a shared device. This means that each user who registers that shared laptop will appear as a separate device on the Devices page.

For information on the Devices page, see Operations.

Step 6: Perform Your First Backup and Restore

After end users install the end-user Laptop package on their devices, you can perform a backup and a restore. For instructions, refer to the following procedures:

  1. Manually perform a backup.
  2. Restore the files and folders that you backed up.
