Adding Additional Nodes to the Storage Pool

Use the following steps to add additional nodes to the Storage Pool in the multiples of the Resiliency/Redundancy factor.

Procedure

  1. Login using the following credentials:

    User Name: root

    Password: cvadmin

  2. From the Command prompt, navigate to /opt/commvault/MediaAgent and then run the setup using the following command:

    ./setupsds.

  3. Enter the following network settings for the node and then select OK:
    • The host name of the node (server)
    • The IP Address and the Subnet Mask for the Data Protection network.
    • The IP Address and the Subnet Mask for the Storage Pool Network.
    • The default gateway for the node.
    • The Domain Name Server of the node.
    • The Root Password of the node.
  4. Select the Not a last node in the block option for the first and the second node and select the Last node in the block option for the third node and press Enter.

    The setup will be completed.

  5. Repeat the above steps in the other nodes.
  6. Enter the following to register the appliance to the CommServe.
    • In the Commserver User Name prompt, enter an user name for accessing the CommServe host.

Note: This User will have the Administrative (master) privileges in the CommCell.

    • In the Commserver Password prompt, set a password.
    • In the Commserver hostname prompt, set a host name for the CommServe host.

Note: This name will be used by the clients and Media Agents to communicate with the Commserve host.

  7. Using a web browser, launch the Admin Console using the following URL:

    https://<Commserver hostname>/adminconsole

  8. Type the user name and password provided during the setup.
  9. Click Login.
  10. From the navigation, click Storage > Storage Pools.

    The Storage Pool page appears.

  11. From the Storage Pools page, click the name of the Storage Pool to which you want to add the additional nodes.
  12. Click Add nodes.

    The Add nodes page appears.

  13. From the Nodes list, select the number of nodes which you want to add.

Note: The number of nodes that you can add to a Storage Pool depends on the Resiliency of the Storage Pool.

  14. Click Add.

This will add the new nodes to the storage pool.

What To Do Next

  • Make sure to change the root password, as follows:
    1. Login as root, using cvadmin as the password.
    2. Type su at the command prompt and press Enter
    3. A Password: line will open below the command prompt.
    4. Type the current root password cvadmin and press Enter.
    5. When the password is accepted, the Enter new Password: line will open below the command prompt.
    6. Type the new password and press Enter. Confirm by retyping the new password again.
      • If you type the password incorrectly, run su and try again.
      • Remember, passwords are case-sensitive.

Additional Notes

If the HyperScale Storage pool, hosts a Deduplication Database (DDB) with more than one partition, the DDB will be automatically re-distributed across the MediaAgents after the storage pool expansion. As a result, jobs accessing the DDB will be automatically suspended during the process and (automatically) resumed once the DDB partitions are successfully re-distributed across all the partitions.

For example, in a storage pool with 3 nodes, a DDB with 2 partitions will be distributed as follows before the expansion:

  • Storage Pool 1
    • MediaAgent 1

      DDB Partition 1

      DDB Partition 2

    • MediaAgent 2

      DDB Partition 3

      DDB Partition 4

    • MediaAgent 3

      DDB Partition 5

      DDB Partition 6

After the expansion, the partitions will be distributed as follows:

  • Storage Pool 1
    • MediaAgent 1

      DDB Partition 1

    • MediaAgent 2

      DDB Partition 3

    • MediaAgent 3

      DDB Partition 5

    • MediaAgent 4

      DDB Partition 2

    • MediaAgent 5

      DDB Partition 4

    • MediaAgent 6

      DDB Partition 6

Note: DDB partitions will be moved to the new node(s) when they are configured as a Control node. (This note does not apply to Data nodes as DDB is not configured in data nodes.)
