Setting Up a Network Connection for Governance Apps and File System Clients

You can setup a one-way network connection so that the Governance Apps components can establish a connection to file system clients and collect data from the clients for Governance Apps.

Note: You must perform this procedure for clients with file system agent installed, but that do not have MediaAgent installed. Otherwise, you cannot collect data from the clients for Governance Apps.

Before You Begin

  • Perform this procedure as a user in the master user group.
  • Create a list of the clients that you want to use for Governance Apps that have File System Agent installed but do not have MediaAgent installed. You will use this list to create the client group in step 1 of the procedure.
  • In step 3, you must associate the Infrastructure smart client group to the network topology. The Infrastructure group is a default client group that includes the CommServe host, MediaAgents, Web Console, Web Server, and proxies. If you already use the default Infrastructure group in another network topology, you can create a duplicate Infrastructure group for Governance Apps (see step 2 in the procedure).

Procedure

Complete each step in the following procedure:

Step 1: Create a Client Group for Your File System Clients

The client group that you create should contain all of the clients with File System Agent and without MediaAgent that you want to use with Governance Apps.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Client Computer Groups and then click New Group.

The Create New Client Group dialog box appears.

  2. On the General tab, in the Group Name box, type a name for the new computer group, and in the Description box, type a description.
  3. Click Manual Association.
  4. In the All clients list, select the clients to add to the group.
  5. Click Include > to move the selected clients to the Clients in this group list.
  6. After the selected clients appear in the Clients in this group list, click OK.

Step 2: (Optional) Create a Duplicate Infrastructure Smart Client Group

If your default Infrastructure smart client group is assigned to another network topology, then you can create a duplicate Infrastructure group that has the same associations as the default Infrastructure group. You can then assign the duplicate Infrastructure group to the network topology for Governance Apps in step 3.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Client Computer Groups and then click New Group.

The Create New Client Group dialog box appears.

  2. On the General tab, in the Group Name box, type a name for the new computer group, and in the Description box, type a description.
  3. Select the Automatic Association check box.
  4. Under Rule Group, select Associated client group, equal to, and Infrastructure.
  5. Click OK.

Step 3: Create a Network Topology

Create a network topology to allow connections between the clients in the file system group and the necessary components for Governance Apps.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, right-click Network Topologies > New Topology.

The Network Topology dialog box is displayed.

  2. In the Topology Name box, enter a name for this instance of a one-way firewall, and in the Description box, enter a description.
  3. For Topology Type, click One-Way.
  4. From the Infrastructure Client Group list, select the client group you created for file system clients without MediaAgent installed.
  5. From the DMZ Client Group list, select the Infrastructure smart client group.

Note: If you created a duplicate of the Infrastructure group, select the duplicate Infrastructure group.

  6. Click OK.

Step 4: Push Network Configuration

After you created the network topology, you can push the network configuration out to the associated clients.

  1. From the CommCell Browser, open Network Topologies.
  2. Right-click the network topology you created for Governance Apps, and then click Push Network Configuration.
