Rules Available for Smart Client Computer Groups

The following section explains the rules that can be used while creating a Smart Client Computer Group as well as real-world examples describing why and how to specify the condition and build the rule. You can use a combination of the following rules to customize your Smart Client Computer Group.

Rules Description Examples
Agents Installed Use this rule to group client computers with a specific set of agents. Use the following steps to display a list of computers with Oracle and Windows File System agent.
  • In the Rule Group section, click Agents installed, equal to and then from the All Agents list, expand Protected Files. Click Windows File System.
  • Click the plus + button to add another rule.
  • In the Rule Group section, click Agents installed, equal to and then from the All Agents list, click Oracle.
Associated Library Name Use this rule to group client computers that use the same storage library. To group all client computers with subclients that use the same storage library, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Associated library name, is and then type the name of the library.
Backup activity enabled Use this rule to group client computers that have backup activity enabled. To group all client computers that have backup activity enabled, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Backup activity enabled and then select is true.
Case manager hold clients Use this rule to group client computers that have been added as assets to a case in Case Manager for Compliance Search. To group all client computers that have been added as assets to a case in Case Manager for Compliance Search:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Case manager hold clients and then select is true.
Client 1Touch Enabled

Use this to group 1-Touch enabled client computers.

To group 1-Touch enabled client computers, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client, equal to and then select 1 Touch Enabled.
Laptop Client

Use this to group all clients which are laptops.

To group clients which are laptops, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client, equal to and then click Laptop Client.
Licensed

Use this rule to create a group for one of the following:

  • Clients with agents that consume a license.
  • Clients with agents that do not consume a license, for example, restore only clients and virtual machines.
To group client computers that do not consume a license, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client, not equal to and then click Licensed.
MediaAgent

Use this to group all clients which have a MediaAgent installed.

To group all MediaAgents, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client, equal to and then click MediaAgent.
Virtual (Cluster Node)

Use this to group Virtual clients of the Cluster.

To group all Virtual clients of the cluster, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client, equal to and then click Virtual (Cluster Node).
Virtual (VSA Discovered)

Use the following steps to group all virtual machines that have the Virtual Server agent.

Note: The clients will not be displayed until the User Preference is configured to show Virtual Server Discovered clients.

To group all virtual machines which have the Virtual Server agent, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client, equal to and then click Virtual.
Client acts as proxy Use this rule to group client computers that have been assigned as a proxy. To group all client computers that have been assigned as a proxy, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client acts as proxy, and then select is true.
Client associated with plan Use this rule to group client computers that are associated with a specific plan. To group all client computers that are associated with the Gold Plan, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client associated with plan, contains, and then enter Gold Plan.
Client by Schedule Interval Use this rule to group client computers that match a specific schedule interval. To group clients that have are associated with a weekly schedule interval, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client by Schedule Interval, equal to, and then click Weekly.
Client description Use this rule to group client computers with a specific client description. To group all client computers that contain test client in the client description, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client Description, contains, and then enter test client.
Client excluded from SLA report Use this rule to group client computers that are excluded from a Service Level Agreement (SLA) report. To group client computers that are excluded from a Service Level Agreement (SLA) report, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client excluded from SLA report, and then click is true.
Client Group Use this rule to associate existing client computer groups to another client computer group. To group a sales client group and an engineering client group into a single admin group, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section:
    • Click Associated client group, equal to and then click Engineering group.
    • Click the plus + button.
    • Click Associated client group, equal to and then click Sales group.
  • From the Match list, click any.
Client is not ready Use this rule to group client computers with client status as not ready. To group client computers that are not ready, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client is not ready, and then click is true.
Client needs Updates Use this rule to group client computers that require Updates to be installed. To group client computers that require Updates to be installed, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client needs Updates, and then click is true.
Client offline (days) Use this rule to group client computers that are offline the number of days defined by the user. To group client computers that are offline for three days, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client offline (days), equal to, and then enter 3.
Client online (days) Use this rule to group all client computers based on the number of days the client computers are online. To group all client computers that are online for 10 days or more, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client online (days), greater than or equal to, and then enter 10.
Client Online in Last 30 Days Use this rule to group client computers that were online in the last 30 days. To group all client computers that are were online in the last 30 days, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client Online in Last 30 Days, and then click is true.
Client uses storage policy Use this rule to group client computers that use the specified storage policy. To group all client computers that use the specified storage policy, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client uses storage policy, and then type the name of the storage policy.
Client Version Use this rule to group client computers from a specific Commvault version. To group all 8.0 version client computers, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client Version and then click 8.0.

Similarly, to group all 9 or 10 version client computers, select 9.0 or 10 from the list.

Client Version Same as CS Version Use this rule to group client computers that have the same software version as that on the CommServe computer. To group client computers that have the same software version as that on the CommServe computer, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client Version Same as CS Version, and then click is true.
Clients by Permission Use this rule to group client computers that have security associations that include the specified permissions. All of the permissions in the CommServe database are listed as available values. To group client computers that have a security association that includes the Administrative Management permission, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients by Permission, equal to, and then click Administrative Management.
Clients by Role Use this rule to group client computers that have security associations that include the specified roles. All of the roles in the CommServe database are listed as available values. To group client computers that have a security association that includes the Master role, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients by Role, equal to, and then click Master.
Clients discovered using VSA Subclient Use this rule to include all virtual machines from a Virtual Server Agent subclient.

You can select a virtualization client, Virtual Server instance, or backup set to include virtual machines from all subclients under the selected entity.

To group all virtual machines from the specified subclient, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients discovered using VSA Subclient, and then browse for the subclient, virtualization client, instance, or backup set.
Clients Meet SLA    
Clients with attached storages Use this rule to group client computers that have MediaAgents installed and have any storage library (tape, disk and cloud) configured on them. To group client computers that have MediaAgent installed and storage library configured, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients with attached storages, and then click is true.
Clients with no Archive Data Use this rule to group client computers meet the following criteria:
  • The client is deconfigured.
  • The backup data is deleted.
  • The software was uninstalled on the client.
  • Additional criteria for discovered virtual machines:
    • The VM is deleted in the management interface for the hypervisor, such as VMware vCenter.
    • The number of days defined in the Number of days to keep deleted VMs option is exceeded. To view this setting, go to Control Panel > Media Management > Data Aging.

This rule helps administrators group client computers that may need to be deleted. After reviewing the clients, the administrator can delete the clients as needed.

Tip: You can configure the software to automatically delete clients that meet the preceding criteria. For information, see Media Management Configuration: Data Aging.

To group all client computers that meet the criteria, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients with no Archive Data, and then select is true.
Clients with OnePass enabled Use this rule to group all client computers where OnePass is enabled. To group all client computers where OnePass is enabled, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients with OnePass enabled, and then select is true.
Clients With Backup Schedule Use this rule to group all client computers that have scheduled backups. To group all client computers that have backup schedules, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients With Backup Schedule, and then select is true.
Clients with improperly deconfigured subclients Use this rule to group client computers that have improperly deconfigured subclients. The subclients could have been deconfigured due to a system error, but the CommServe database still shows the clients as configured. To group all client computers with improperly deconfigured subclients, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients with improperly deconfigured subclients, and then select is true.
Clients with long Running Jobs Use this rule to group client computers that have jobs running for more than the specified number of days. To group client computers that have jobs running for 5 or more days, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients with long Running Jobs, greater than or equal to, and then enter 5.
Clients with Subclients having associated storage policy Use this rule to group client computers based on storage policy association on subclients. To group all client computers having subclients with associated storage policies, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Clients with Subclients having associated storage policy, and then select is true.
Client With Synthetic Full Backup N Days Use this rule to group client computers based on the number of days since the last synthetic full backup operation on the client computers. To group all client computers that ran a synthetic full backup in the last 3 days, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Client With Synthetic Full Backup N Days, less than or equal to, and then enter 3.
CommCell Pseudo Client Use this rule to group all psuedo client computers. To group all psuedo client computers, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click CommCell Pseudo Client, and then select is true.
Company Client Provider Associations Use this rule to group all client computers that are associated with a company. To group all client computers that are associated with Company1, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Company Client Provider Associations, equal to, and then select Company1.
Company Installed Client Associations Use this rule to group all clients computers installed by any user associated with a company. To group all client computers that are installed by a user associated with Company1, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Company Installed Client Associations, equal to, and then select Company1.
Content Analyzer Cloud Use this rule to group all Content Analyzer clouds. To group Content Analyzer clouds do the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Content Analyzer Cloud and then click is true.
Days since client created Use this rule to group all client computers based on the number of days since the creation of the client computers. To group all client computers that were created in the last 5 days, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Days since client created, less than or equal to, and then enter 5.
Days since last backup Use this rule to group all client computers based on the number of days since last backup operation on the client computers. To group all client computers that were backed up in the last 5 days, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Days since last backup, less than or equal to, and then enter 5.
External group as client owner Use this rule to group client computers that have specific external user groups in the User Groups box on the Security tab of the Client Computer Properties dialog box. To display the list of client computers that have the "EngAdmin" user group as the client owner, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click External group as client owner, contains and then enter EngAdmin.
External group as client owner Use this rule to group all client computers that have a specific external group as a client owner. To group all client computers containing ext in the external group name that was assigned as a client owner, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click External group as client owner, contains, and then enter ext.
Hostname Use this rule to group client computers with a specific host name. To display the list of client computers that contains "mydomain.mycompany.com" in the hostname, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Hostname, contains and then enter mydomain.mycompany.com.
Inactive AD user as client owner Use this rule to group all client computers that have an inactive Active Directory (AD) user as a client owner. To group all client computers that have an inactive Active Directory (AD) user as a client owner, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Inactive AD user as client owner, and then select is true.
Local user group as client owner Use this rule to group client computers that have specific local user groups in the User Groups box on the Security tab of the Client Computer Properties dialog box. To display the list of client computers that have the "master" user group as the client owner, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Local user group as client owner, contains and then enter master.
MediaAgent has Lucene Index Roles Use this rule to group all MediaAgent client computers with a specific Analytics Engine role configuration. To group all MediaAgent client computers with Edge Drive Analytics Engine role configuration, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click MediaAgent has Lucene Index Roles, equal to, and then select EDGE Drive.
MediaAgents for clients in groups Use this rule to group clients that have MediaAgent installed and are part of specific groups. To display the list of clients that have MediAgent installed and are associated with a group "Backup", select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click MediaAgents for clients in groups, click contains and then enter Backup.
Name Use this rule to group the client computers with a specific name. To display the list of client computers in the sales department that starts with "Sales_", select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Name, starts with and then enter Sales\_. Note that a backslash is needed before the underscore.
OS Type Use this rule to group the client computers with a specific operating system type, for examples, Windows or Unix. To group all Windows client computers, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click OS Type, equal to and then click Windows.

OS Version Use this rule to group the client computers with a specific operating system version, for example, Windows 2012 R2. To group all Windows 2012 R2 client computers, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click OS Version, is and then click Windows 2012 R2.

Package Installed Use this rule to group client computers with a specific package installed on the client computer. To group all client computers that have Oracle Agent installed, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Package Installed, equal to and then click Oracle iDataAgent.

Product Version Use this rule to group client computers with a specific Commvault package installed on the client computer. To group all client computers that have Commvault version xx Service Pack y installed, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Product Version, is and then enter xx SPy.

Restore activity enabled Use this rule to group all client computers that have restore activity enabled. To group all client computers that have restore activity enabled, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Restore activity enabled, and then select is true.
SnapBackup clients Use this rule to group client computers that have Intellisnap enabled. To group all client computers that have intellisnap enabled and have storage libraries attached, do the following:
  • In the Rule Group section:
    • Click SnapBackup clients and then select is true.
    • Click the plus + button.
    • Click Clients with attached storages and then click is true.
  • From the Match list, click all.
Solr Servers    
Strikes Count Use this rule to group client computers based on the number of consecutive backup failures.

Strike count refers to the number of backup failures on the client computer. When the backup job succeeds after multiple backup failures, the strike count is reset to 0.

To group all client computers that have a minimum of 3 strike counts, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Strikes Count, greater than or equal to, and then enter 3.

 

Subclient Name Use this rule to group client computers with a specific subclient name. To display the list of client computers that have "default" subclients, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Subclient Name, is and then enter default.
Timezone Use this rule to group client computers with a specific time zone. To group all client computers with the same time zone, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click Timezone, equal to and then click the appropriate time zone.

User as client owner Use this rule to group client computers that have specific users in the Users box on the Security tab of the Client Computer Properties dialog box. To display the list of client computers that have "admin" as the client owner, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click User as client owner, contains and then enter admin.
User Client Provider Associations Use this rule to group all client computers that have a specific user association. To group all client computers that are associated with "user1," select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click User Client Provider Associations, is, and then enter user1.
User description contains Use this rule to group all client computers that have client owners with the specified text in the user properties description box. To group all client computers that have client owners with "administrator" in the user properties description box, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click User description contains, contains, and then enter administrator.
User Group Client Provider Associations Use this rule to group all client computers that have a specific user group association. To group all client computers that are associated with "testgroup," select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click User Group Client Provider Associations, is, and then enter testgroup.
User Group description contains Use this rule to group all client computers that have client owners with the specified text in the user group properties description box. To group all client computers that have client owners with "administrator" in the user group properties description box, select the following:
  • In the Rule Group section, click User Group description contains, contains, and then enter administrator.
