FAQ for CommServe Failover: How do I Setup Automatic Failover Using Witness Servers?

  1. Witness Servers must be installed and setup for Automatic Failover.

    See Installing the High Availability Computing Package on Witness Servers (Optional) for more information on installing the witness servers

  2. Configure the Witness Servers using the CommServe Failover Configuration tool.
    • Start Failover Configuration.
    • Click Next twice.
    •  Click the Use Witness Servers check box, select 3 or 5 Witness Server hosts for the configuration  and then click Next.
    • Click Next twice.
    • Click the Advanced button and then click the Witness Servers tab.
    • Accept the default values or provide other open port numbers in the Data Port, Listener Port, and Election Port boxes,.  All configured hosts must use the same ports.

      If you have a firewall configured setup, make sure that the assigned ports are open and accessible.

    • In the Reconnnect Timeout Minutes box, enter the time interval .
    • Save the changes and exit the CommServe Failover Configuration tool.
  3. Setup automatic failover using the Failover Monitor.
    • Start Failover Monitor.
    • Click the Failover Configuration tab.
    • Set Enable Monitoring to Yes. This will activate the witness servers configured in the previous step.
    • Set Disable Automatic Failover to No. This will enable automatic failover.
    • In the Reconnnect Timeout Minutes box, enter the time interval for failover to the passive node. If witness Servers are configured, and if Automatic Failover is enabled, the timeout minutes is used to recheck the availability of the active node and if necessary failover to the passive DR node.
    • Click Update Configuration to save the information.
