Installing Service Packs on the Standby CommServe Host

When you build the standby CommServe host, make sure that the latest Service Pack installed on the production CommServe host is also installed on the standby CommServe host.

About This Task

It is good idea to install the Service Pack on both the production and standby CommServe hosts using the same package. Hence, we recommend that a remote cache directory is configured on the standby CommServe host as stated in the Before You Begin section below.

Before You Begin

  • Configure the remote cache directory on the standby CommServe host as  follows:

    • Open CommCell Console from the production (active) CommServe host.

From the CommCell Console ribbon, on the Tools tab, click Add/Remove Software > Software Cache Configuration.

    • Configure a remote directory in the standby CommServe host using the instance in which the SQL Agent  and the High Availability Computing packages are installed.

Click the Remote Software Cache tab and then click Add.

From the Computer list, select the client in which the SQL Agent  and the High Availability Computing packages are installed.

Tip: Note down the path to the Cache directory - this will be needed in step 3.

    • Make sure that all the packages are synchronized.

Click the Configure Packages to Sync button.

Enable Sync Packages and choose the All Packages option.

Click OK twice to save the configuration.

  • Synchronize the remote cache with the software cache.
    • From the CommCell Console ribbon, on the Tools tab, click Add/Remove Software > Download Software.
    • Click the Options tab and  click Sync  from the Job Type area.
    • Click OK.

You can monitor the progress of the synchronize operation from the Job Controller.

Note: This operation may take some time, depending on the network bandwidth available in your environment.

Procedure

  1. Install the service pack on the production (active) node first.

See Installing the Service Pack Remotely Using the CommCell Console for more information.

  2. Synchronize the database with the standby (passive) node.
  3. Install the service pack on the standby (passive) node as follows:
    • On the standby CommServe host, open the Command prompt and navigate to the following folder.

      Remote_Cache_Directory\SoftwareCache\CVMedia\<Commvault version>\Windows\

Tip: Remote_Cache_Directory is the path to the Cache directory that was noted in the Before you Begin. Remember to navigate to this folder in the second instance.
    • Run Setup.exe from the installation package.
    • On the welcome page, select the I Agree check box and proceed to the next page.
    • On the Choose the Installation Type page, click Install packages on this computer and proceed to the next page.
    • On the Install Option page, select Install Updates, and then select the This is a standby CommServe host option. Proceed to the next page.
    • Follow the instructions in the installation wizard and complete the installation.
