Creating and Configuring an Edge Drive Client

To enable Edge Drive for end users, create and configure an Edge Drive client in the CommCell Console. An Edge Drive client is the CommCell entity used to manage Edge Drive data for a set of CommCell or external user groups.

About This Task

Each Edge Drive client must be associated to a set of CommCell or external user groups, as well as a storage policy. The settings of the storage policy that you associate to an Edge Drive client will determine the storage library used for Edge Drive data and the retention settings of Edge Drive data.

If you require Edge Drive clients with different storage policies or user groups, you can create and configure additional Edge Drive clients.

During Edge Drive client creation, you can assign the following permissions to the associated user group:

  • Browse - to view the files in Edge Drive
  • Upload - to add files to Edge Drive
  • Download - to download or restore files from Edge Drive to your local disk. (optional)
  • Sharing - to share Edge Drive files with other users.

To access Edge Drive from laptops, the user group must have a minimum of Browse and Upload permissions.

After you create an Edge Drive client, a subclient policy for the Edge Drive client is automatically created. You can use the options in the Edge Drive subclient policy to control what types of files can be added to the Edge Drive. See Controlling File Types Allowed in Edge Drive.

To maximize storage efficiency, use an existing storage policy configured with client-side deduplication and two disk copies.

For example, if you have a storage policy defined for your laptop clients, use the same laptop clients storage policy with your Edge Drive clients. See Storage Policy - Getting Started.

  6. Click the Index Server list and then select the MediaAgent with Analytics Engine configured for Edge Drive.
  7. Click OK.

The users associated to the Edge Drive client will be able to view their Edge Drives from the My Data page in the Web Console. Laptop client users will also be able to view Edge Drive using the CommVault Edge Monitor on their laptop clients. See Accessing Edge Drive.

Result

The Edge Drive client is created. The job priority for the Edge Drive client is automatically set to 3.

What To Do Next

After you have created and configured at least one Edge Drive client, you can tell users how they can start using Edge Drive. See Edge Drive for End Users.

Make sure the users are added as client owners for their laptops. See Owner Security.

Uninstall Edge Drive

If you need to uninstall Edge Drive, deconfigure the Edge Drive client. See Releasing a License (Deconfiguring).
