Post Upgrade Checks

Windows File System - Upgrade the Operating System

Before You Begin

  • Identify the computers to be upgraded and what software is installed.
  • Ensure that you have all the information required for the Windows Install before uninstalling, installing, or upgrading any software. The Windows File System agent software must be re-installed using the same configuration as the original install, in order to access the backed up data and history from the previous installation.

Operating System Upgrade Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Console, on the client being upgraded, kill all jobs that are running, waiting, pending, or stopped.

For instructions, see Killing a Job.

  2. From the CommCell Console, right-click the client and select Properties.
  3. On the Activity Control tab, clear the Enable Backup and Enable Restore check boxes, and click OK.
  4. If required, uninstall the Windows File System agent.

Notes: This step is not necessary if you are completely replacing your operating system with a clean install; do this only if you are upgrading your operating system.

Important: Do not delete the client’s agent icon in the CommCell Console. If you do, the associated backup data and history will be lost.

  5. Upgrade, or install the new version of, the operating system.
  6. Reinstall the Windows File System agent software.

    Notes:

    • The agent should be installed to the same directory in which it was previously installed.
    • Ensure the client is installed with the same Fully Qualified Domain Name or short domain name with which it had been previously installed.
  7. The operating system upgrade procedure is now complete.

Post-Upgrade Considerations

  • Install any Updates or Service Packs that may have been made available after the release of the Windows File System agent software.
  • Ensure that backups and restores are no longer disabled. If necessary, enable backups and restores from the Activity Control tab of the agent Properties dialog box.
  • It is recommended to run a full backup of the default subclient after performing an OS upgrade to secure the new operating system data. Do not perform the following operations until a full backup has been run:
    • Full System Restore
    • Synthetic Full Backup
  • After upgrading the Microsoft Windows operating system, do not browse the System State data that was backed up before the upgrade and perform an in-place restore to the upgraded computer.
  • Reinstall all other agents, including any post-release Updates or Service Packs, in the same locations in which they were previously installed.

UNIX File System - Upgrade the Operating System

Whenever you upgrade the operating system of a client computer, you must uninstall the Base software and File System agent software prior to the operating system upgrade and then reinstall these modules after the operating system upgrade.

Before You Begin

  • Identify the computers to be upgraded and what software is installed.
  • Ensure that you have all the information required before uninstalling, installing, or upgrading any software. The Unix File System agent software must be re-installed using the same configuration as the original install, in order to access the backed up data and history from the previous installation.

  4. If required, uninstall the agent software in the following order: Unix File System agent software, any other associated software besides the Base software (for example, MediaAgent software, WA SCSI driver software), then the Base software.

  6. Proceed as follows:
    • If required, reinstall the Base software.
    • Reinstall the UNIX File System agent.

    Notes:

    • The agent should be installed to the same directory in which it was previously installed.
    • Ensure the client is installed with the same Fully Qualified Domain Name or short domain name with which it had been previously installed.
  7. The operating system upgrade procedure is now complete.

Post-Upgrade Considerations

  • Install any Updates or Service Packs that may have been made available after the release of the Unix File System agent software.
  • Ensure that backups and restores are no longer disabled. If necessary, enable backups and restores from the Activity Control tab of the agent Properties dialog box.

Important: Do not delete the client’s agent icon in the CommCell Console. If you do, the associated backup data and history will be lost.

  6. If you completely replaced your operating system with a clean install, rather than an upgrade, reinstall the Base software, then reinstall the Macintosh File System agent software. See Deployment - Macintosh File System agent.

    Notes:

    • The agent software should be installed to the same directory in which it was previously installed.
    • Ensure the client is installed with the same Fully Qualified Domain Name or short domain name with which it had been previously installed.
