Debugging Workflows

Use the debug mode to step through each activity in your workflow.

Before You Begin

Optional: Set breakpoints in the workflow. See Setting Workflow Breakpoints.

Procedure

  1. In the workflow editor window, click Debug to start stepping through the workflow activities.

Tip: After stopping at a breakpoint, click Continue to proceed to the next breakpoint or click Next to proceed to the next activity.

  2. Review the activities:
    • In the activity properties pane, on the Inputs tab, click the Debug tab and review the runtime inputs for the activity.

Important: If an activity is linked to a workflow property input or variable that you change during debugging, click Retry to update the activity with the new value. For information on the Workflow Properties pane, see Configure Workflow Properties during Implementation.

    • In the activity properties pane, on the Outputs tab, click the Debug tab and review the outputs generated by the activity. Outputs are available if the activity executed successfully.
    • In the Immediate pane, on the Log tab, review the runtime information, for example:

      2544 DecisionActivity:[IsNameValid] result of decision expression is[false]
2544 DecisionActivity:[IsNameValid] taking transition [InformationalMessage_1] because result [false] matches inputed condition
2544 WorkflowStep:[IsNameValid] completing activity with status [COMPLETED], outputs [<IsNameValid><system><startTime>1414519839</startTime><status>COMPLETED</status><timedOut>false</timedOut></system></IsNameValid>]

  3. Optional: Update the activities:
    • In the activity properties pane, on the Inputs tab, click the Definition tab and update the runtime inputs for an activity.

For information on activity inputs, see Defining Activity Inputs.

    • In the activity properties pane, on the Outputs tab, click the Definition tab and update the outputs for an activity.

For information on activity outputs, see Viewing the Outputs of an Activity.

  4. To exit debug mode, click Stop.

For information on other commands available in the debug menu, see Workflow Debug Mode - Online Help.
