Archive - OnePass for UNIX File Systems

After you enable OnePass, perform your first backup.  The backup operation will also archive the files that meet the archiving criteria.

Before You Begin

For OnePass clients, verify that the Show aged data during browse and recovery check box is cleared in the Control Panel. Enabling this option causes synthetic full backups to fail.

For more information on this option, see Browse/Search/Recovery option.

Procedure

The default subclient has the root directory as the subclient content. Therefore a backup and archive job run on the default subclient results in backing up the entire root directory. In order to run a backup and archive of selective data files, run the backup on a user defined subclient with specific content.

The following section provides step-by-step instructions for performing your first backup.

  1. From the CommCell Console, navigate to Client Computers | <Client> | File System | defaultBackupSet.

Right-click the Subclient and click Backup.

  1. Select Incremental as backup type and Immediate to run the job immediately.

    Click OK.

Note that the first job is converted to a Full backup job.

  1. You can track the progress of the job from the Job Controller window of the CommCell console.
  1. Once the backup process is complete, archiving rules are applied per volume (at the mount point level) and the files that meet the archiving rules are stubbed after at least three DR backups plus two days. Delayed stubbing is disabled on the client when the agent is installed initially and remains disabled until seven (7) days after the first backup job is run on the client. For more details, refer to Delayed Stubbing
    • Stubs are placeholders of the original data after it has been migrated to the secondary storage.
    • Stubs replace the backed up files in the location selected by the user during backup.
    • After stubbing, the block size of the files on the disk reduces to a single block.

On FreeBSD, the size of the stub depends on the file being stubbed and may be more than a single block.

    Files after stubbing

  1. Once the job is complete, you can view the job details from the Backup History. Right-click the subclient and select Backup History.
  1. Click OK.
  1. To view the stubbed files:
    • From the CommCell Console, navigate to Client Computers | <Client> | File System | defaultBackupSet.
    • Right-click the Subclient and click Browse and Restore.
    • Click View Content.

In the Client Browse window, the files that got stubbed are shown as Stub in the Type column.
