Creating a Disk Filter for VMware VM

To exclude specific VM disks from backup operations, you can create a disk filter for a VMware VM.

Note

Browse is only available for Streaming VM groups and not available for IntelliSnap enabled VM groups.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. Click the VM that you want to create a disk filter for.

    The VM page appears.

  3. On the Configuration tab, in the Disk Filters section, click the edit button Pencil.

The Manage disk filters dialog box appears.

  4. To exclude specific VM disks, do the following:

    1. Click Browse.

The Browse virtual machine disk page appears.

    2. Select the VM disks to exclude.

    3. Click OK.

  5. To remove a VM disk from the disk filter, in the row for the VM, click action_button, and then select Delete.

  6. Click Save.

  7. To include or exclude the VM group disk filters set for the VM, in the Disk Filters section, use Include VM group disk filters toggle to indicate if you want to use, or not use the VM group disk filters set for the VM backup:

    • Toggle enabled (default): Honors both the VM group and the VM disk filters for this VM and excludes those disks from the backup.

    • Toggle disabled: Honors either the VM instance disk filters (if any) or the disk filters set on the VM group for this VM, and excludes only those disks from the backup.

When you set disk filters on the VM, the following terms apply:

      • Inherited: Indicates that it is inherited from the VM group and will be excluded from the backup.

      • VM Instance: Indicates that it is configured for the VM and will be excluded from the backup.

You cannot edit or remove the inherited disk filters. These disk filters must be modified on the VM group page as they are configured on the VM group. You can only modify the VM instance disk filters on the VM page.
