Performing a Live Mount

Perform a live mount to run a virtual machine directly from a stored backup.

If you initiate a live mount operation from the properties page for a VM, you can select a specific recovery point. For more information, see Viewing Virtual Machine Information.

Requirements

  • Live mount for Azure supports Hyper-V 2016 to Hyper-V 2022 server.

  • The destination Hyper-V should be in an Azure environment.

  • For best results, the host computer should have at least 8 CPU cores and 32 GB RAM.

  • The destination Hyper-V host where the live mount is being performed should have sufficient amount of disk space.

  • The destination Hyper-V host must have the MediaAgent package installed.

Before You Begin

  • Create a recovery target. For more information, see Create a Recovery Target.

  • Run a backup of the VMs that you want to live mount.

  • Verify that the VM owner or the user group that the VM owner is associated with meet the following criteria:

    • Has a role that includes the Browse and Live Browse permissions

    • Is associated with the recovery targets for live mounts.

  • If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. For the virtual machine that you want to live mount, click the action button action_button, and then select Restore.

    The Select restore type page appears.

  3. Click Live mount.

    The Live mount dialog box appears.

  4. Provide the following information:

    • Recovery target: Select the recovery target.

    • Virtual machine name: Enter a display name for the live mounted VM.

      By default, the prefix/suffix set in the recovery target is added to the source VM name to create a display name for live mounted VM.

    • Network: Select one of the following options:

      • No network: Mount the VM without a network connection.

      • Available networks: Select a network to use for the live mounted VM.

    • Copy precedence: Select the copy precedence to perform the live mount from.

  5. Click Submit.
