Adding a Citrix (XenServer) Hypervisor

You can add a Citrix (XenServer) hypervisor to support data protection operations for all VMs and templates hosted or managed by the hypervisor.

Before You Begin

You will need the following information to add a hypervisor:

  • Install the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) on at least one VM (proxy) in the XenServer host. You can install the VSA on other VMs to create additional VSA proxies for the host.
  • At least one VSA proxy is needed for each storage repository.
  • Identify the master server address for the XenServer node and obtain administrator user credentials. If there are multiple endpoints for the master server URL, use the public endpoint.

Start the Configuration Wizard

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisors tab, click Add hypervisor.

    The Configure hypervisor page appears.

  3. Select Xen and then click Next.

    The configuration wizard appears.

Add Hypervisor

  1. In Master XenServer, enter the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or IP address of the master server.

  2. In Hypervisor display name, enter the display name that you want for the hypervisor client.

  3. In User Name and Password, enter the user credentials to provide administrative access to the hypervisor.

  4. Click Access nodes to either search for and then select specific access nodes, or click Automatic to have the system automatically select access nodes.

  5. Click Next.

Add VM Group

  1. In Name, enter a descriptive name for the VM group.

  2. To create rules that auto-discover and select VMs to back up, do the following:

    1. Click Add, and then select Rule.

The Add Rule dialog box appears.

    2. From the first list, select the type of rule to create:

      • Browse: Select specific VMs. (Selecting this option changes the Add rule dialog box to the Add content dialog box.)
      • Guest DNS hostname: Select VMs based on a hostname or a domain. For example, to select hosts on the "mycompany.com" domain, enter Guest DNS hostname | Ends with | mycompany.com.
      • Guest OS: Enter the exact name of the operating system or a pattern to identify an operating system group (for example, Microsoft to identify any VM that has a version of the Windows operating system).
      • Host: Enter the host name, the IP address of the host, or a host name pattern using wildcards. When you add a host, all VMs on the host are included in the backup.
      • Power state: Select VMs based on whether they are powered on or off.
      • Template: Enter Yes or No.
      • Virtual machine: Enter the display name of the VM.
      • Virtual machine name or pattern: Select VMs based on their names. For example, to select VMs that have a name that includes "east", enter Virtual machine name or pattern | Contains | east.
    3. From the second list, select a qualifier such as Equals, Contains, or Starts with.

    4. From the third list, provide a value as required for the type of rule.

    5. Click Save.

  3. To select VMs in other ways, do the following:

    1. Click Add, and then select Content.

The Add Content dialog box appears.

    2. From the Browse and select VMs list, select Server View or Folder View.

    3. Browse and select VMs and templates.

    4. Click Save.

  4. In Plan, select the plan for the VM group.

  5. Click Next.
