Restoring Full VMs for Oracle VMs

You can restore one or more virtual machines at a time. A virtual machines can be restored in place (overwriting the source virtual machine) or out of place (with a different VM name, or to a different server).

You cannot restore a virtual machine to a version that is lower than the version of the VM that was backed up.

Before You Begin

• If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

• If you want to restore data using a specific MediaAgent and/or copy, review the information in MediaAgent and Copy Precedence Considerations for Virtualization Restores.

Procedure

1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

   The Virtual machines page appears.

2. Click the VM groups tab.

   The VM group page appears. The VM groups area displays summary information for any existing VM groups.

3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button , and then click Restore.

   The Select restore type page appears.

4. Select Full virtual machine to restore one or more full virtual machines.

   The Restore page appears.

5. To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:

   1. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.

      The Settings dialog box appears.

   2. For MediaAgent, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the MediaAgent or to specify a MediaAgent:

      • Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.

      • To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.

   3. For Source, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the copy of backup data or to specify the copy:

      • Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.

      • To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.

   4. Click Save.

6. Select the data to restore, and then click Restore.

   The Restore options dialog box appears.

7. Provide the requested information:

   • Destination: To restore to a different Oracle VM Manager deployment, select the hypervisor from the list.

   • Access node: To use a different proxy for the restore, select it from the list.

     You can also select Automatic to distribute the VMs in the restore job across the VSA proxies that are configured for the hypervisor. VMs are assigned to the access nodes by performing a host/server match.

     If you are restoring multiple VMs, you can select the All VMs tab to specify options for all of the VMs in the job, or a specific VM to specify options for that VM.

   • VM display name: (when restoring a single VM) Type a new virtual machine name to be used for the restored VM.

     Note

     If an existing VM with the same name exists on the destination host and you do not select Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists (described below), the restore job fails.

   • Enable edit destination VM name: (when restoring multiple VMs) Select this option and enter a prefix or suffix to be added to the source VM name to create each destination VM name.

   • Destination server: Click Browse to select the destination server to host the restored VM.

   • Repository: Select a repository for virtual machine disks from the list.

   • Network settings: Current network interfaces are shown for the selected VM. You can add a new network interface, or edit or delete existing network interfaces for the restored VM.

   • Power on VMs after restore: Select this option to start restored VMs automatically.

   • Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists: To delete an existing virtual machine and replace it with the restored VM, select this option.

   Additional options:

   • Disk Provisioning: Select one of the following options:

     • Original: Use the same disk provisioning method as the source VM.

     • Sparse: Use sparse provisioning to write data to disk as needed.

     • Non-sparse: Use non sparse provisioning to write the entire disk when it is provisioned.

   • Reuse existing VM client: Reuse the existing VM client and map its information, such as Client Name, Host Name, and Client id to the source VM.

8. Click Submit to run the restore job.
