Performing a Seamless Upgrade on a Web Server Computer

You can upgrade the operating system on a Web Server computer without removing software.

Before You Begin

Complete the tasks that are required for the computer you are upgrading:

  • As a precautionary measure, perform a Disaster Recovery Backup.

  • From the CommCell Console, kill all jobs that are running, waiting, pending, or stopped. For instructions, see Killing a Job.

  • From the CommCell Console, right-click the CommServe, select Properties. On the Activity Control tab, clear the Enable Backup and Enable Restore check boxes, and click OK.

  • From the Process Manager window, stop all services.

Procedure

  1. Upgrade the operating system.

  2. If the computer also has the MediaAgent software installed, do the following:

    • From the Services window, disable the RSM service.

      Note

Removable Storage Manager is no longer available as of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

    • Power-on the library.

    • Detect the connected device.

    • Disable the media changer for the library in the Windows Device Manager.

    • From the Expert Storage Configuration window, confirm that all libraries and drives remain configured and detected. If a library or drive is configured, but not detected, detect devices again using the Expert Storage Configuration window. For more information on detecting devices, see Device Detection.

  3. If services are not already started, restart services from the Process Manager window.

For instructions, see Restarting a Service.

  4. When all upgrades are complete for the CommCell, enable data protection and data recovery operations.
